To be installed by a certified electrician or other qualified person.
WARNING: To prevent severe shock or electrocution, always turn power off
at the service panel before installing this product, working on the circuit or
changing a fan.
• This Fan Speed Control is to be used only with ceiling paddle fans.
• Do not use this product with fans whose power requirements exceed the
maximum power (stated in amperes) of the fan control.
• Note: Due to varying standards by fan manufacturers, the speed ranges for
this control may differ slightly between fan manufacturers.
• To avoid overheating and possible damage to other equipment do not install
this device to control a receptacle, a fluorescent lighting fixture or bulb, or a
transformer supplied appliance.
HDH163PMM • Do not use to control a fan and light that can be operated by same switch.
• Do not connect this product to a power source other than 120VAC, 60Hz.
• Use copper wire only.
• Always slide the Air Gap Switch to the full down (OFF) position when
working on the fan.
HMR
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. All Fan Speed Controls can be damaged by improper wiring. Check for
short circuits prior to installing the fan speed control.
Procedure for short circuit check:
a. Disconnect power to circuit by removing fuse or turn circuit breakers
OFF.
b. Install a switch instead of the fan speed control. Turn the switch to the
"ON" position.
c. Turn power ON. If the circuit breaker trips, a short is present. If the fan
fails to turn ON and OFF with the switch, the wiring may be incorrect.
d. Correct wiring, if necessary and retest.
e. Install the fan speed control only after the fan operates properly with
the switch.
2. Protect from dirt and dust. The Fan Speed Control can be damaged
from contaminates encountered during the construction process. The
control should not be installed until the construction process is complete.
Any Fan Speed Control damage due to improper installation is not
covered under warranty.

1. If a color change kit was provided, and a different color is desired, see
the Color Change Procedure (Figure 1), if not proceed to step #2.
2. PRIOR TO INSTALLATION, set fan pull chain to its highest speed (be
sure fan is operating at full speed before disconnecting power).
3. Disconnect power to circuit by removing fuse or turning circuit breaker to
OFF before installing.
4. Remove existing wall plate and switch.
5. Connect fan control, as shown in the wiring and installation diagrams,
using the lead wires provided. Install fan control in wall box, with the
word "TOP" on the metal strap right side up, using the mounting screws
provided. (Wiring Diagram)
6. Fasten fan control to wall box with mounting screws provided.
7. Attach wall plate.
8. Set fan control to OFF position. See Operating Instructions.
9. Restore power and test. Be sure to check that fan does not stall in any
of the ON positions. Do not allow fan to remain in "stalled position." DO
NOT USE PULL CHAIN AFTER INSTALLATION OF FAN CONTROL.
Single-Pole Installation
1. NOTE: Wire colors indicated are those of the device only, not the
wires in the wall box. Be sure to test wall box wires before making
any connections.
2. Connect the device following the single-pole wiring diagram shown.

Three-Way Installation
1. NOTE: Three-way or multi-location applications require the use of a
Multi-Location Remote HMR, in conjunction with a Preset Fan controller.
A regular three-way switch should not be used to control a Multi-
Location Fan controller. Doing so may damage the control and, in turn,
void the unit's warranty.
See Wiring Diagram Figures 2-3 below.
OPERATION
User Interface – Overview
The user interface of the Fan controller
consists of:
[1] Locator LED
[2] ON/OFF Pushbutton
[3] Four-Element LED Bar Graph
[4] Air Gap Switch
[5] RAISE/LOWER Rocker buttons
LED Indicators
Fan Off – When the Fan controller is powered,
but the fan is OFF, the locator LED [1] will be on at the full intensity
(if enabled), and all LEDs in the bar graph [3] will be off.

Fan On – When the Fan controller is operating the fan, the locator LED
[1] will be off, and the bar graph [3] will be illuminated starting from the
bottom, to indicate the present fan speed.
Setup Modes – The function of the LEDs varies with each specific setup
mode, and will be detailed in those descriptions.
ON/OFF Pushbutton [2]
• Momentary push of ON/OFF button with the fan OFF fades the fan on to

• No utilice este producto con ventiladores cuyos requisitos de alimentación
excedan la potencia máxima (establecida en amperios) del control del
ventilador.
• Nota: Debido a la variación de normas de los fabricantes de ventiladores,
los rangos de velocidad para este control pueden diferir levemente entre
los distintos fabricantes de ventiladores.
• Para evitar el sobrecalentamiento y posibles daños en otros equipos, no
instale este dispositivo para controlar un receptáculo, un accesorio o lámpara
de iluminación fluorescente o un artefacto alimentado por transformador.

• Momentary push of ON/OFF button with fan ON fades fan off at a rate of
50%/second (from full on, it will take 2 sec to off).
• Double-tap of ON/OFF button with fan ON or OFF fades fan to maximum
setting at 50%/second.
RAISE Rocker button (+) [5]
• Momentary push with fan ON increases fan power by 1 setting in the bar
graph (25% of max power).
• Push and hold for more than 0.5 seconds with fan ON ramps power up
at 20%/second (approx 5 sec from min to max).
LOWER Rocker button (-) [5]
• Momentary push with fan ON decreases fan power by 1 setting in the
bar graph (25% of max power).
• Push and hold for more than 0.5 seconds with fan ON ramps power
down at 20%/second (approx 5 sec from max to min).
Air gap switch [4]
• Slide to OFF position before replacing fan. Slide to ON position after fan
has been replaced.
USER-ADJUSTABLE PARAMETERS
Disable/Enable Locator LED [1]
Holding the ON/OFF pushbutton [2] down for approximately 10s with fan
OFF, until Locator LED flashes once in confirmation, disables operation
of the Locator LED when fan is off. Continuing to hold the button
for an additional 2s (12s total), until the Locator LED flashes twice in
confirmation, enables the Locator LED operation.
Power Failure Recovery
In the case of a power failure, the Fan controller saves its last operating
state to memory. When power is restored, if the fan was on, the fan
controller will automatically fade the fan on to last operating state at
50%/second.
