INTRODUCTION
A peak flow meter is used to measure the fastest rate you can force air from your lungs. With asthma, your
peak flow reading may drop before you even experience any symptoms. Tracking your readings will help
detect these changes and may help you maintain control of your asthma.
TruZone* PFM can be used by either children or adults as part of an overall asthma management program,
and must always be used as instructed. If you have questions about how to use this device or do not fully
understand the user instructions, please contact your healthcare professional. If you record an unusual
reading, seek professional advice immediately.
USING YOUR PEAK FLOW METER
It will be easiest for you to remember to record your peak flow reading if you associate it with something you
do twice daily – like brushing your teeth or prior to taking your asthma medications. It is generally advised
that peak flow be measured at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, but always as recommended by your healthcare
professional. Your TruZone* PFM should be cleaned before first use and then weekly.
1. Visually inspect the device and make sure there are no defects or
foreign objects lodged inside. This can be done by lightly blowing
into the PFM to see if the yellow indicator moves, then resetting the
indicator. Replace IMMEDIATELY if any defect is noticed.
2. To reset the yellow indicator, gently shake the device vertically until it
is positioned directly behind the reset diamond.
3. Hold your TruZone* PFM by the clear body, ensuring the end of the
device is not blocked.
4. Stand or sit up as straight as possible, while still being comfortable.
5. Take as deep a breath as possible. Do not inhale through the device.
6. Put the TruZone* PFM mouthpiece into your mouth – making sure
to seal your lips tightly around the green mouthpiece. Don't block
the mouthpiece with your teeth or tongue as this may result in an
inaccurate reading.
7. Blow out as hard and as fast as possible. The force of the air coming
out of your lungs will cause the yellow indicator to move along the
numbered scale.
NOTE: Avoid coughing or spitting into the device to ensure accuracy.
8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 three times (or as instructed by your
healthcare professional), resetting the yellow indicator between each
reading.
9. Record the best of your three readings in your Daily Record.
