Troubleshooting guide
The following guide lists problems which do not require professional servicing. If, however, the problem cannot be remedied using this
guide, contact an Onkyo authorized service center for assistance.
e@ Power cord plug is loose.
e insert plug properly into outlet.
Playback but no sound.
@ Hook-up incorrect.
@ Check and hook up correctly according to page 2.
e Stereo amplifier input selector switch is set |}e Change switch position.

Tape does not move.
@ Slack tape wound around pinch roller.

REC button does not engage.
e No tape in cassette holder.

Distorted sound.
e Distortion in tape.
e@ Tape is probably bad but confirm by listening to
another.
@ Recording was done at too high a level.
Recordings are distorted.
e Readjust Input Recording Level Control knobs ac-
cording to the directions on page 4.
e Dirty head, pinch roller or capstan shaft.
e Cassette shell is binding tape or tape is
stretched.
Tape squeal and skipping.
e Clean (see page 6).
e Change cassette or try correcting with fast forward
and rewind.
@ Connecting cables not inserted firmly.
e External flux leakage from nearby amplifier
Excessive hum during playback.
e Insert plugs firmly.
@ Move deck away from hum source.
e Dolby NR encoded tape played back with
NR off.
@ Incorrect equalization.
e Set the Dolby NR switches to the proper position
(Dolby B or C) for the tape being played back.
e Confirm that cassette has tape type detection holes.
High frequencies too strong.
e@ Non-Dolby NR encoded tape played back
with Doiby B or C NR on.
