1 Product Description
1.1 Product design
The backplane supply module in the Nexicon
tem is used mainly for input power to the backplane.
The power supply to the module is +24 VDC. Ac-
cepted input range is 12–30 VDC. +24 VDC is dis-
tributed to the other modules through the backplane.
Main features:
• +24 VDC to the other modules
• +24 VDC to external equipment
• Connection to a backup battery
• Connection to an HMI and to a service tool

1.2 System description
The Nexicon
is a programmable and extendable
monitoring and control platform. Nexicon
signed as a modular system where each module is
configured to monitor or control different assets or
set of features.
Communication between the modules in the system
is made through the backplane.
The communication to a web interface or to a SCA-
DA system is made through the application manag-
er. The communication to a Xylem HMI or a service
tool is made through the backplane supply module.
This image shows an example of a configuration of a
controller for a pumping station. The following mod-
ules are seen from left to right: Backplane supply
module, application manager, two pump modules,
and one I/O module. All modules are connected to
the backplane.
2 Installation
2.1 Installation requirements
The safety of any system that includes these mod-
ules is the responsibility of the assembler of the sys-
tem.
The safety instructions must be read before installa-
tion.
• Indoor use. The modules are rated IP20.
• Operating temperature -20°C – +60°C (-4°F –
+140°F)

• For North America and other applicable markets
– The modules must be installed in an industrial
control cabinet.
• IEC requirements
– The modules must be installed in a safety en-
closure with minimum IP54 rating.
• The modules must be installed on a Nexicon
backplane.
• Do not block air vents. Make sure that there is
sufficient air for cooling.
• The modules must be installed in the direction
that is shown in the images.
• Any equipment connected to the modules must
meet local standards and regulations.
• The supply and all connected voltages below
30 V
, 60 VDC, or 42.4 V
RMS
with PELV according to EN/IEC/CSA/
UL61010-2-201.
• The maximum current for the terminal blocks is
15 A.
• The system must be powered off before installing
a new module.
The cables that are connected to the
modules must meet the following requirements:
– 0.2 mm² to 2.5 mm² (AWG 24 to AWG 12)
– Minimum temperature rating + 105°C
(+ 221°F)
– Copper conductors only
• EMC requirement – The cables that connect to
HMI, service tool, or to the next rack of back-
planes must be screened.
2.2 Install the backplane supply module
Depending on the backplane installation, the module
is installed on a wall or on a DIN rail directly. The
module is installed on the left side of a backplane.
1. Select one of the following steps:
Condition Action
Wall
1. Connect the module to the al-
ready installed backplane.
The module snaps onto the
backplane.
2. Mark the location of the screws.
3. If applicable, remove the mod-
ule and drill holes.
4. Screw the module in place.
The hole diameter is 4.5 mm
(0.18 in).
DIN rail
1. Hang the module on the DIN
rail.
2. Push the module sideways to
snap onto the backplane.
After installation, the finger tab of backplane is
visible from the left side of the backplane supply
module.
2. Connect the applicable equipment to the module.
