General

The Sonopuls 590 is a microprocessor controlled unit
for continuous and pulsed ultrasound therapy. The
equipment is only meant to be used by competent per-
sonnel in physiotherapy, rehabilitation or adjacent ar-
eas. A great deal of attention has been paid to design,
functionality and safety. The carefully chosen dimen-
sions and the built-in carrying handle also make the unit
suitable for ambulant use.
Two ultrasound frequencies
Therapeutic effects are only obtained when the applied
energy is absorbed in the tissue. For deeper-lying tis-
sues this occurs at a frequency of 1 MHz, while 3 MHz
is very suitable for superficial structures. Large and
small treatment heads are available for both frequen-
cies.
Two treatment head connections
The Sonopuls 590 allows two treatment heads to be
connected simultaneously, e.g. a large 1 MHz head and
a small 3 MHz head. The treatment head to be used
can then be selected from the unit. The treatment heads
are fully interchangeable, so that a treatment head can
be connected to any other Sonopuls 590 unit without
recalibration.
Beam characteristics
The quality of the therapy depends, to a great extent,
on the quality of the ultrasound unit and the treatment
heads. The characteristics of the ultrasound beam can
only be measured with extremely expensive test equip-
ment. For this reason, safety authorities require that
characteristics such as the ERA (Effective Radiating
Area) and the BNR (Beam Nonuniformity Ratio) should
be stated on the treatment head. Random tests are
regularly carried out by an independent institute to
check the accuracy of the figures given.
Efficiency and safety
All treatment heads are provided with contactcontrol.
This feature, in combination with the excellent beam
characteristics, maintains the quality of the treatment.
Maximum safety is inherent in the design of the unit.
Both the electrical safety and the ultrasound safety of
the Sonopuls 590 comply fully with the IEC 60601-1
safety standards. A built-in microprocessor monitors
correct functioning of the unit on switching on, and dur-
ing operation.
Finally
You have made a wise choice in selecting the Sonopuls
590. We are confident that your unit will continue to
give satisfaction over many years of use. Nevertheless,
if you have any queries or suggestions, please contact
your authorized distributor.

FOREWORD

General
It is important that you read these operating instruc-
tions carefully before using the Sonopuls 590. Please
make sure that these instructions are available to all
personnel who operate the equipment

Electromagnetic Interference

Operation in close proximity (i.e. less than 2 metres) to
working shortwave or microwave therapy unit may pro-
duce instability in the Sonopuls 590 output.
To prevent Electromagnetic Interference, we strongly
advice using separate mains groups (phases) for the
Sonopuls 590 and the shortwave or microwave equip-
ment. Ensure that the mains cable of the shortwave/
microwave unit does not come near the Sonopuls 590
or the patient.
