3.2 Aligning the red dot finder
The red dot, or LED, finder is an aid for helping you to find celestial objects quickly and easily. If you look into
the sky through the LED finder you will see a red dot, which serves you as a visual aid. This red dot appears as
if it is actually in the night sky itself. The LED finder can be adjusted in two axes and the brightness of the red
LED is dimmable. The 3V battery is in the underside of the finder and is replaceable.
1. There may be a plastic strip for protecting the battery under the battery cover. Simply pull this out before
use.
2. Now turn the small screw on the side. You will hear a clicking sound and a faint point of LED light will
appear in the window of the finder. Turning the switch further will increase the brightness of this dot.
Adjust the intensity to a level you find comfortable for you.
3. In daylight, take the telescope out into the open and select a point on the horizon about 1-2 km away.
The peak of a distant church spire or top of a tree is suitable.
4. Find the top or peak using the main telescope and place it precisely in the centre of the field of view.
5. The object will probably already be near the red dot from the LED finder, take a look through it.
Now adjust the LED finder using the azimuth adjuster at the front end and the height adjuster at the rear
end, and notice how the point of light moves.
6. Make sure that the object is now precisely centred in both optics.
