6. When the stars twinkle particularly beautifully
Not all nights are equally good for observing. One night can offer breathtaking observing conditions while
another is a washout, depending on the level of atmospheric turbulence. If the stars are twinkling particularly
wildly and romantically it means that the atmospheric turbulence is particularly bad, and warm and cold air
layers will impair the view.
The atmospheric conditions are often called the 'seeing' by astronomers. Good seeing means particularly still
air. If you have to observe in bad seeing, do not use high magnifications if at all possible. A planet viewed in bad
seeing conditions will appear as blurred and out of focus.
