For Your Safety
The SM6-AL distance measuring sensor has been manufactured according to the accepted rules
of safety and current technology. There is, however, still a danger of personal injury or damage
to equipment if the following general safety instructions and the warnings before the steps
contained in these instructions are not complied with.
O
Read these instructions completely before working with the SM6-AL distance measuring
sensor.
O
Keep these instructions in a location where they are accessible to all users at all times.
O
Always include the operating instructions when you pass the SM6-AL distance measuring
sensor on to third parties.
Intended use
O
The SM6-AL distance measuring sensor is for commercial use only.
O
Only use the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor on AVENTICS actuators with magnet.
O
The pressure regulator may only be used within the limits listed in the technical data.
Intended use includes having read and understood these instructions, especially the chapter
"For your safety".
Improper use
It is considered improper use if the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor
W is used for any application not stated in these instructions or
W is used under operating conditions that deviate from those described in these instructions.
Personnel qualifications
Assembly and commissioning require basic electrical and pneumatic knowledge. Assembly and
commissioning may therefore only be carried out by qualified electrical or pneumatic personnel
or an instructed person under the direction and supervision of qualified personnel.
Qualified personnel are those who can recognize possible hazards and institute the appropriate
safety measures, due to their professional training, knowledge, and experience, as well as their
understanding of the relevant regulations pertaining to the work to be done. Qualified personnel
must observe the rules relevant to the subject area.

The following must be observed:
General instructions
W Observe the regulations for accident prevention and environmental protection in the country
where the product is used and at the workplace.
W Do not modify or convert the device.
W Only use the device within the performance range provided in the technical data.
W The SM6-AL distance measuring sensor is not a safety component in terms of the Machinery

NOTICE
On installation
W Make sure the relevant system component is not under pressure or voltage before
assembling the product or when connecting and disconnecting plugs.
W Protect the system against being switched on. Hang signs on the main switches that warn
workers against switching the system on.
W Avoid ferritic parts in the immediate vicinity of the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor.
During operation:
W Only commission the distance measuring sensor after it has been completely assembled,
as well as correctly connected and tested.

Device Description
The SM6-AL is a non-contact analog position sensor that provides an output signal proportional
to the cylinder stroke. The magnet integrated in the cylinder piston generates a magnetic field
that acts on the sensor elements that are arranged along the longitudinal axis. An evaluation
of the signals generated by the sensor determines the current position of the cylinder piston
(for details, see Technical Information - R412018764).
The zero point and end value of the measurement range can be adjusted to the stroke to be
measured via the control panel. The measurement range is set to the entire measuring length
of the respective sensor in the default setting.
Assembly of the distance measuring sensor is supported by an in-range display (LED 1 lights up
yellow when the magnetic piston is within the measurement range).
As analog output, a voltage or current signal can be selected via the control panel. The current
output is activated at the factory.

Assembly and Commissioning
Danger of injury if assembled under pressure
Injuries and damage to the device or system components may occur if the pressure is not
switched off before beginning assembly.
O
Make sure that the relevant system part is not under pressure before you assemble
the product.
Due to the magnetic measuring principle, observe the following:
Strong external magnetic fields (e.g. welding devices) or ferromagnetic add-on parts
located in the area of the proximity switch could possibly impair the position measuring
sensor function.
Assembling the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor
The in-range display provides support during assembly:
LED 1 lights up yellow when the magnetic piston is within the measurement range.
1. Insert the sensor holders to the left and right into the sensor slots. Note the number of sensor
holder pairs indicated in the table in Fig.
2. Position the sensor from above in the center of the dovetail guide and screw down the sensor
holders uniformly. Torque: M
= 0.8 Nm (see Fig.
A
3. Connect the distance measuring sensor to a suitable power supply (see "Technical Data" and
3
Fig.
).
4. Check whether the sensor records the entire cylinder stroke (LED/in-range display = must
light up yellow).
Commissioning the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor
Risk of uncontrolled actuator movements when the pneumatics are switched on
There is a danger of personal injury if the system is in an undefined state.
O
Put the system in a defined state before switching it on.
Commissioning may only be carried out by qualified electrical or pneumatic personnel
or an instructed person under the direction and supervision of qualified personnel
(see also "Personnel qualifications").
The measurement range does not have to be set. If you do not teach-in
the measurement range, the maximum possible measurement range will be used
as the default.
5
Display of the operating state
The operating state of the distance measuring sensor is displayed by means of 2 two-color LEDs.
W If no LED is lit up, no supply voltage is applied.
W The status of the distance measuring sensor is displayed by means of lit LEDs
(see table below).
W Flashing LEDs (3 Hz) indicate the respective configuration mode.
