2.) General information, overview of fall arrester
devices
Fall arrester devices (HSG) are part of a fall arrest system including
an anchor point and a harness complying with EN 361 (see fig.1)
and are used exclusively to protect persons who are exposed to the
danger of a fall during their work (e.g. on ladders, roofs, scaffolding,
etc.). During the ascent or descent, the user can move around freely.
The spring ensures that the rope/webbing is fed independently into
the device. The tensile force is so minimal that the user will hardly
notice it. In the event of a fall, the device blocks as soon as the falling
speed reaches approx. 1.5m/s. Fall arrester devices should not be
used over bulk goods or similar materials you can sink into. In such
cases, the required blocking speed is not reached and the sinking
cannot be prevented. (5.14)
Fall arrester devices limit the energy produced during a fall to such an
extent that the body can withstand this energy. Once a fall arrester
device has been used to intercept an actual fall, it must be taken out
of use and checked by an qualified person. If the test results are
negative, it must be withdrawn from service and destroyed!
Testing and maintenance:
Inspections (documented visual and functional checks) must take
place at least once a year (in accordance with EN) and should be
carried out by a qualified person in accordance with BGG 906 (i.e.
complying with Germany national guidelines for PPE inspection).
Maintenance (documented disassembly and intensive inspection)
must be carried out at least once every 5 years and may only be
carried out by WÜRTH.
Regular inspection and maintenance depends on the actual lifting
intervals and the atmosphere (dust, moisture etc.) in which the fall
arrester equipment is used.
