Important Information regarding your orthosis
Your orthopedic workshop supplied you with an custom made orthosis especially fabricated and
aligned for your needs. We advise you to read this manual thoroughly before usage, because it
contains important information as well as safety regulations.
Usage and limitations of the orthosis
Your orthosis is an orthopedic device especially customized for your needs. The orthosis will enable you to stand,
ambulate , or to overcome other challenges attributable to disease or limb stability Therefore, it is essential that you, the
patient, follow all of the instructions, verbal and written, given to you by the orthotist regarding use, adjustments,
operation and maintenance.
The orthosis is not suitable for usage in water and contact with acids or solvents should be avoided.
To expose the orthosis to temperatures above 50°C may cause a change in fit and can effect the functionality. Also be
aware that the cable connecting the joint and satellite has some slack and does not crack.
Function & risks
During gait, the device locks at the end of the swing phase, just prior to heel strike and unlocks the knee at heel off in
preparation for swing. In moments where you have a feeling of insecurity you can move your leg forward in full
extension, which will automatically cause the joint to lock.

Satellite Functions
Three different control modes: 1 Automatic Locking 2 Manual Unlocking 3 Manual Locking
Mode 1 is used during active ambulation to mimic normal gait. If the orthosis does not function in this
manner smoothly, the orthotist should be seen for an adjustment as soon as possible. Only the orthotist
should make adjustments to the functional unit. The opening for the functional unit (pendulum) should be
sealed with the IQ sticker; this protects the mechanism from dirt or dust.
Mode 1
Mode 2 is usually only necessary for single time unlocking or sitting or when the automatic unlock feature
did not disengage. To manually unlock the knee, the remote control switch is pulled up to the highest
position. The orthosis must not have flexion load because this pinches the pawl within the mechanism and
prevents it from being withdrawn. When the switch is released, it retracts to automatic lock and unlock
Mode 2
mode to insure the knee lock is not disengaged at all times.
Mode 3 can be used for security e.g. in domestic environments with small steps and turns. It engages the
knee lock at all times for maximum standing stability. This mode is activated by straightening the leg and
pushing the lower button. It is important to note that the lock will not engage until the orthosis is fully
extended or straightened out. The manual lock is disengaged by pulling the upper switch back to
Mode 3
automatic lock mode.
If the remote control cable should break, a locking security feature will be engaged within the SPL joint to
insure safety.
Inspection, Maintenance & Hygiene
The orthosis should be checked every time before usage for damages and function of the hinging parts. It is also very
important to check your skin conditions on a daily base for pressure points. The patient should also be aware of the
structural strength of the orthosis and not use the device above functional load limits. Although the orthosis is intended
for active ambulation the patient should use their best judgment to assess stability on uneven or inclined surfaces.
An interface sock such as the SmartKnit interface sock (with Coolmax
bacteria, fungus, and odor) is recommended for limb protection and comfort.
We advise you to have your orthosis serviced by a technician every 6 months.
In case of problems concerning your orthosis you should contact your orthopedic workshop immediately.
