WARNING:
HAZARD - ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Not intended for use on ener-
gized wiring or circuits. To avoid electrical shock, disconnect all
sources of electrical current before testing (except on line to test). If
you are unfamiliar with logical wiring, consult a qualified electrician
or other professional. Check local codes and requirements before
working on electrical or communication wiring circuits.
WARNING:
It is recommended that this product not be used outside during
adverse and/or wet weather conditions.
The TONE GENERATOR (TONER) and PROBE makes quick work
of identifying and tracing cables, wires and pairs. Simply connect
the TONER to a line to trace and follow the signal with the
PROBE. Correct identification is easy to verify by using some
simple techniques.
For best results, use only 9 Volt Alkaline or Lithium batteries. Open
the battery compartment with a screwdriver and insert a new
battery. Properly attach the connection wires and close the
compartment. Do not overtighten the screw.
The PROBE is a highly sensitive inductive probe with amplified
speaker, which makes the signals audible that are being transmit-
ted by the TONER. The non-conductive tip allows testing in
distribution blocks without disturbing any other services.

WARNING:
Even though the tips are non-conductive, never touch the tip to
exposed power sources such as electrical outlets!
The PROBE has an earphone jack on the back. It can be used
with the optional ear phone for greater sensitivity or in a noisy
environment to increase the tracing distance from up to 150 cm (5
feet) to a cable or wire.
When using the optional earpiece in conjunction with the PROBE,
begin by using the low volume selection while tracing tone. Always
approach the tone cautiously to avoid loud tone volume in the ear-
piece.
The TONER emits two distinctive audio signals, alternating and
continuous. Both are easy to select by pressing the
buttons on the front side of the TONER. Pressing the SOL button
will provide a high power solid trace signal. The
ON – status is indicated by a solid lighted LED beside the button.
Pressing the ALT button will provide a high power alternating trace
signal. The ON – status is indicated by a blinking LED. The LED –
ON status allows you to determine if the unit is on or off – even
from a great distance.
Cable Tracing
The cable tracing procedure will enable you to find the path of a
cable run inside or behind a wall or an unseen run. During this
procedure, adjacent pairs may pick up some of the signal. This
should be done quickly in order to minimize the effect on other
services in the cable.
First, connect the red test lead to a pair or a single wire of the
unknown cable (see
Figure
another wire in the cable, but not of the same pair, or to ground.
Switch the unit on by pressing one of the buttons, SOL or ALT.
When tracing shielded cables, connect the red lead to the shield
and the black lead to ground.
To find the cable take the PROBE and switch the unit on by press-
ing the HIGH button. In this mode you can locate signals which are
weak or distant. Move the PROBE toward the cable to locate the
strongest signal. Then reduce the gain setting by pressing the
LOW button. This decreases the sensitivity by 6 dB to allow exact
location of the cable. The strongest signal will be received when
the insulation is contacted. You will be able to locate the cable path
even when there is an open on it.
Tracing Pairs
If you are tracing a pair (see
connect the test leads to the pair and switch the TONER on. If the
red and the black test lead are connected to a powered line, the
POL LED will light up. If the LED lights red, the red test lead is
connected to the TIP side and the black test lead to the RING side
of the circuit. This means the wiring is reversed. The red lead is
RING and the black lead is TIP. When the test leads are connected
in the proper way, the LED will light green. If the LED does not
light up, it is possible that there is a short on the line.
