Figure 2. Pair Tracing
To verify if the line is shorted or not powered, in CONT mode, slide
the small switch ON. If there is a short on the line, the CONT LED
will light up. If the CONT LED does not light, the line has an open
end. Switch the CONT mode off and start transmitting a trace
signal by pressing SOL or ALT. The detected trace signal is now
audible by using the PROBE.
Now press the HIGH button and scan the pairs of the distribution
blocks until you find the location of the loudest signal. Reduce the
gain by pressing the LOW button to exactly locate the pair. To be
sure you have located the right pair, split the pair at the open end,
about 5 cm (2 inches) into a Y-position, then move the PROBE
slowly at a right angle to the wires (see
appears over the first wire, a ZERO in the middle and a HIGH over
the other wire, then you can be assured you have located the right
pair. If you cannot find a ZERO, a cable fault may be indicated
which could be an open, split pair, etc.
Continuity
Set the sliding switch on the right side of the unit to the ON
position and CONTinuity metering is activated. The corresponding
CONT LED on the front side will light up red, which indicates a low
resistance. The less intense the LED light, the higher the
resistance is up to 5K Ohms. In this mode continuity metering is
also possible at switches, lamps, plugs, etc.
Polarity
Line status is indicated immediately after TONER is connected to
the analog telephone line with the modular cable or in connection
with an adapter if needed. If the line is connected correctly, the
DUO LED POL light is green. If there is a Tip/Ring reversal, it
lights red. The brightness of the LED corresponds to the voltage
level. If there is AC from an incoming call, the POL LED flickers
bright/dark. In case of pure AC it will light orange. All types of
power sources can be checked this way for AC or DC, for polarity
and the level. If the black test lead is connected to positive and the
red lead to negative, the POL LED will light green.
The maximum voltage on the two test leads can be 110 volt AC
and 280 volt DC. If the voltage goes over 90 V for more than 10
seconds, the automatic fuse will release to protect the circuit. After
2 seconds with no power, the fuse will reconnect the leads.
In-House Communication
The TONER supplies a power source for analog telephones when
the switch is set to CONT position. Connect the Test Set to the
TONER as shown in
