Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):
BMR means the amount of energy the body needs for its basal vital functions when the
body is in the state of absolute calmness (e. g. when you stay in bed for 24 hours). This
value mainly depends on factors like weight, body size and age. This value is displayed
on your smartLAB
fit body analyser scale. The unit is kcal/Tag (kcal/day). The basis for
®
the calculation is the science-based Harris-Benedict-Formula.
This is the amount of energy your body needs at least in the form of nutrition. If your
body gets less energy for a longer time this can affect your health negatively.
Active Metabolic Rate (AMR):
The active metabolic rate means the amount of energy the body needs daily in the state
of activity. The energy consumption increases with an increasing physical exercise. Your
smartLAB
®
fit body analyser scale has 4 different activity indices (refer to chapter "Set-
ting up of the user data") to determine the appropriate degree of activity.
In order to maintain the current weight the consumed energy must be replaced in the
form of food and drink. In case this energy will not be replaced the body uses the stored
fat – the body looses weight. In case the body gets more energy than the required AMR
the body is not able to use this energy – it will be stored inside the body and you gain
weight.
Time as a factor:
Please note that only a long-term result counts. Short-term changes of your weight
within a few days are absolutely normal and are often due to changes of the content of
water. Only middle-term or long-term changes are related to the content of your adipose
or your muscles. In case your weight decreases for a short time and the content of the
adipose of your body increases or stays the same you only lost water (e.g. after a phy-
sical exercise or after having visited a sauna). If your weight increases in the medium
term and your content of adipose decreases or stays the same you might have build up
more muscle mass.
Note: Adipose, content of water or muscle mass may not be added because the muscle
tissue also contains components of water.
