Safety precautions for circular saws
Sawing
 DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and the
blade. Keep your second hand on auxiliary handle, or
motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they
cannot be cut by the blade.
 Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The guard can-
not protect you from the blade below the workpiece.
 Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the work-
piece. Less than a full tooth of the blade teeth should be
visible below the workpiece.
 Never hold the workpiece being cut in your hands or
across your leg. Secure the workpiece to a stable plat-
form. It is important to support the work properly to mini-
mize body exposure, blade binding, or loss of control.
 When carrying out work where the application tool
could touch hidden electricity cables or its own power
cord, hold the power tool by the insulated grips only. If
the power tool comes into contact with a live wire, its metal
parts will also become live and this will result in an electric
shock.
 When ripping, always use a rip fence or straight edge
guide. This improves the accuracy of cut and reduces the
chance of blade binding.
 Always use the correct size saw blades with the appro-
priate toolholder diameter (e.g. diamond-shaped or
round). Saw blades that do not sit properly in the saw's fit-
tings will run untrue and may cause the user to lose control
of the tool.
 Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolt.
The blade washers and bolt were specially designed for
your saw, for optimum performance and safety of opera-
tion.
 Kickback – Causes and basic safety precautions
– "Kickback" is a sudden reaction caused by the saw blade
jamming, catching on something or being fitted incorrect-
ly. This causes the saw to lift up uncontrollably, coming out
of the workpiece and moving towards the user.
– If the saw blade catches or jams in the cut being made,
the blade will lock and the power of the motor will push the
saw back towards the user.
– If the saw blade turns in the cut being made or has been
fitted incorrectly, the teeth on the back edge of the saw
blade may get stuck in the surface of the workpiece. This
will move the saw blade out of the cut and cause the saw to
spring back towards the user.
Kickback is caused by incorrect or improper use of the
saw. It can be prevented by taking the basic precautions
described below.
 Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw and po-
sition your arms to resist kickback forces. Position
your body to either side of the blade, but not in line with
the blade. Kickback could cause the saw to jump back-
wards, but kickback forces can be controlled by the opera-
tor, if proper precautions are taken.
Bosch Power Tools
 When blade is binding, or when interrupting a cut for
any reason, release the trigger and hold the saw mo-
tionless in the material until the blade comes to a com-
plete stop. Never attempt to remove the saw from the
work or pull the saw backward while the blade is in mo-
tion or kickback may occur. Investigate and take correc-
tive actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding.
 When restarting a saw in the workpiece, center the saw
blade in the kerf and check that saw teeth are not en-
gaged into the material. If the saw blade is binding, it may
walk up or kickback from the workpiece as the saw is re-
started.
 Support large panels to minimize the risk of blade
pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag under
their own weight. Supports must be placed under the pan-
el on both sides, near the line of cut and near the edge of
the panel.
 Do not use dull or damaged blades. Unsharpened or im-
properly set blades produce narrow kerf, causing exces-
sive friction, blade binding and kickback.
 Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers must be
tight and secure before making cuts. If blade adjustment
shifts while cutting, it may cause binding and kickback.
 Take particular care when sawing through existing
walls or other areas you cannot see into. Sawing through
hidden objects may make the saw blade jam when plung-
ing in and cause a kickback.
Function of the lower protective guard
 Check lower guard for proper closing before each use.
Do not operate the saw if lower guard does not move
freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower
guard into the open position. If saw is accidentally
dropped, lower guard may be bent. Raise the lower guard
with the retracting handle and make sure it moves freely
and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles
and depths of cut.
 Check the operation of the lower guard spring. If the
guard and the spring are not operating properly, they
must be serviced before use. Lower guard may operate
sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a
build-up of debris.
 Open the lower protective guard by hand only when
making certain cuts, such as "plunge cuts and angular
cuts". Open the lower protective guard using the re-
traction lever and release it once the saw blade has
penetrated the workpiece. The protective guard should
work automatically when carrying out any other kind of
sawing work.
 Always observe that the lower guard is covering the
blade before placing saw down on bench or floor. An un-
protected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk back-
wards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time
it takes for the blade to stop after switch is released.
Additional safety warnings
 Do not reach into the saw dust ejector with your hands.
They could be injured by rotating parts.
