LUBRICATION
Each time a Model MT4 Tie Tamper is disassembled for
maintenance, repair or replacement of parts, lubricate the
tool as follows:
Inject approximately 3 to 6 cc of Ingersoll–Rand No. Oil
10 into the air inlet and operate the tool for 5 seconds to
coat the internal parts with oil.
Throttle Maintenance
1.
To eliminate a throttle leak, remove the Handle Shaft,
withdraw the Throttle Valve (7) and clean the valve
seat in the Handle Shaft. Examine Throttle Valve Face
(8) and if it is worn or damaged, replace it with a new
one.
2.
To eliminate a leak around the stem of the
rubber–faced Throttle Valve, install a new Throttle
Valve Bushing (2). The following procedure is
recommended:
a. Remove the Throttle Handle (14), Stop Pin (17)
and Stop Pin Spring (18).
b. With a throttle valve bushing arbor, press the worn
Bushing toward the grip end of the Handle Shaft
until the first groove in the bushing wall is visible
in the cross bore; then break off the end section of
the Bushing with a punch. Repeat this to remove
the other two sections of the Bushing.

c. Using the arbor with the guide, which serves as a
stop for correctly locating the Bushing, press the
new Bushing, beveled end first, into the Handle
Shaft until the trailing face of the Bushing is flush
with the bottom of the undercut in the Shaft.
d. Ream the Bushing to size with a throttle valve
bushing reamer.
e. Install Stop Pin Spring, Stop Pin, and Throttle
Handle.
Press the worn Fixed Nozzle (27) out of the front end
of the Barrel (26) with a nozzle ejecting arbor.
Slide the new Fixed Nozzle, small beveled end first,
into the front end of the Barrel, aligning two corners
of the hexagon hole in the Fixed Nozzle with the
centers of the two holes in the bolt lugs on the Barrel.
Maintaining this alignment, press the Fixed Nozzle
into the Barrel until it seats on the shoulder on the
barrel bore.
After the Fixed Nozzle has been replaced several
times, the Barrel bore may become enlarged to the
extent that a standard size Fixed Nozzle will not be
a tight press fit. When this condition is noted,
install an oversize Fixed Nozzle.
