OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Keep the Nuts (34) tight on the Barrel Bolts (32) and
Handle Bolts (33).
Never operate a Tamper without the rubber Buffer
(30). Doing so may cause damage to major parts.
Replace the Buffer when it becomes worn to the
extent that it does not absorb the blow when the
Tamper Steel is lifted from the ballast, or when worn
to the extent that the end play of the Tamper Steel
exceeds 1/2".
Do not operate the Tamper if the Fixed Nozzle (27) is
worn to the extent that the Tamper Steel (35) is a
sloppy fit. A worn Fixed Nozzle allows air to escape
from the front end, lowering the efficiency of the

Tamper, and also allows the Tamper Steel to cock out
of alignment with the Piston (25), causing undue wear
on the piston face.
Always wear eye protection when operating or
performing maintenance on this tool.
Always turn off air supply and disconnect air supply
hose before installing, removing or adjusting any
accessory on this tool, or before performing any
maintenance on this tool. Failure to do so could result
in injury.
OILER ADJUSTMENT
Correct oiler adjustment is made at the factory and
should not be changed unless lubrication difficulty is
experienced.
An indication of proper adjustment is the presence of a
light film of oil on the shank of the Tamping Steel directly
below the end of the Tamper. A dry shank denotes
insufficient lubrication. Oil running down the shank is an
indication of excessive lubrication. In either case the oiler
should be adjusted.
Remove the Handle Shaft (1) and the top Gasket (20) from
the Tamper and turn the Oiler Adjusting Screws (22),
located in the back face of the Body. Turning the Screws
in reduces the amount of oil fed into the air stream;
backing the Screws out increases the flow.
When reassembling, be sure the Gasket is positioned
exactly as it was before removal.
Cleaning
If a Tamper slows up or seems low in power, disconnect
the air hose, pour 3 to 6 cc of a clean, suitable, cleaning
solution into the air inlet, reconnect the hose and run the
Tamper for about one minute.
Immediately after flushing, disconnect the hose and
pour about 3 cc of Ingersoll–Rand No. 10 Oil into the
air inlet.
