1 Universal PA Amplifier PA-888
100 W max. PA amplifier (Mono) for 230 V~ and 12 V
battery operation, also suitable for the mobile use in a
car or aboard a ship. 4 – 16-Ω speakers (preferably
horn drivers) as well as 100 V speaker systems can be
connected.
The following units may be mixed in any combination:
- 2 low impedance microphones,
- 1 audio unit with line output (tape recorder, cassette
player, tuner, CD or record player),
- 1 built-in signal circuit which can be switched to
siren, fog horn, or chime tone.
A tone control and a 7-way LED level indication are
built in. The 70/100 V speaker connections are not
grounded, the 12 V DC connection is provided with a
protection diode against wrong polarity.

2 Safety Notes

This unit corresponds to the directive for electromag-
netic compatibility 89/336/EEC and the low voltage
directive 73/23/EEC.
The unit uses dangerous mains voltage
B
(230 V~). To prevent a shock hazard, do not
open the cabinet. Leave servicing to authorized
skilled personnel only. Besides, any guarantee
claim expires if the unit has been opened.
Caution! A dangerous voltage is present at the
speaker connections (20) during the operation.
All connections must only be performed or
changed if the unit is switched off.
It is essential to observe the following items:
Caution!
During the operation the heat sink (17) at the rear
side of the unit may become hot (T > 60 °C). Do not
touch this area!
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect it
against dripping water and splash water, high
humidity, and heat (ambient temperature range
0 – 40 °C).
Do not place any vessels filled with liquid, e. g. drink-
ing glasses, on the unit.
The heat which is generated in the unit has to be
carried off via air circulation. Therefore, do not
cover the air vents of the housing with anything.
Do not insert or drop anything into the air vents! This
could result in electric shock.
Do not take the unit into operation and immediately
take the mains plug out of the mains socket if:
1. damage at the unit or mains cable can be seen,
2. a defect might have occurred after a drop or simi-
lar accident,
3. there are malfunctions.
The unit must in any case be repaired by authorized
skilled personnel.
Never pull the mains plug out of the mains socket by
6
means of the mains cable.
A damaged mains cable must only be repaired by
the manufacturer or authorized, skilled personnel.
Only use a dry, soft cloth for cleaning, by no means
chemicals or water.
If the unit is used for purposes other than originally
intended, if it is connected or operated in the wrong
way or if it is not repaired by authorized skilled per-
sonnel, no liability can be taken over for possible
damage.
If the unit is to be put out of operation definitively,
take it to a local recycling plant for disposal which is
not harmful to the environment.
Important for U. K. Customers!
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accord-
ance with the following code:
green/yellow = earth
blue = neutral
brown = live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this
appliance may not correspond with the coloured
markings identifying the terminals in your plug, pro-
ceed as follows:
1. The wire which is coloured green and yellow
must be connected to the terminal in the plug
which is marked with the letter E or by the earth
symbol
, or coloured green or green and yel-
low.
2. The wire which is coloured blue must be con-
nected to the terminal which is marked with the
letter N or coloured black.
3. The wire which is coloured brown must be con-
nected to the terminal which is marked with the
letter L or coloured red.
Warning - This appliance must be earthed.
3 Connections
1) The upper terminal connections COM (14) and
4 Ω/8 Ω/16 Ω (15) are provided for low impedance
horn drivers or other speakers. This upper terminal
COM (14) is connected with ground.
2) At the lower terminals COM (19) and 70/100 V (20),
100 V speaker systems are connected floating
above ground, like PA columns etc. which have a
100 V audio transformer.
3) The terminal GND (18) is the chassis connection. It
has to be connected with the COM terminal (19)
next to it, if the 100 V circuit has to be grounded.
4) Only after connection of all other components
connect the amplifier via the mains jack (16) with
the enclosed mains cable to a socket (230 V~/
50 Hz).
5) If in case of a power failure of the 230 V mains the
amplifier should continue to operate, the power fail-
ure back-up of the amplifier can be connected to a
12 V rechargeable battery via the terminals 12 V
(13). Then the power switch (12) is out of function,
i. e. after the connection of the rechargeable battery
the amplifier is always in operation.
