3. Before starting the operation
Always ensure tools are used,
inspected and maintained in
compliance with the respective
local, state, national or federal
regulations.
• Before starting to work, disconnect engine
from power supply. Carefully read operating
instructions for the engine and if necessary
for the other equipment assemblies and
devices (e.g. radio etc.).
IMPORTANT
Ensure that the radio code is recorded.
CAUTION
Jacked up vehicles must be secured
adequately.
IMPORTANT
Only use appropriate spare parts.
4. Commissioning
Universal camshaft locking device set
Universally applicable and adjustable, e.g
for timing belt replacement
The universal camshaft locking device set
4794/5 contains:
4794-1 L ocking device for
twin camshaft engines,
quad camshaft engines (additional
tool required for some engine con-
figurations) and for locking the diesel
injection pump sprockets for the
camshaft
4794-2 Extension bridge piece 4794-1 for
distance bridging for additional
applications
4794-3/3 L ocking device for
single camshaft engines and
V engines with 2 camshafts (addi-
tional tool required for some engine
configurations)
PART 1: 4794-1
PART 2: 4794-3
Maintenance work on engines must be carried out only by experienced mechanics.

Design and function
Always wear personal protective equipment.
PART 1:
Locking device 4794-1 and
extension bridge piece 4794-2
Illustration 1, page 3
• Locking device 4794-1 keeps twin cam-
shafts in their timing position to ensure the
engine timing is retained during timing belt
replacement applications.
• On diesel engines which have their cam-
shaft and injection pump sprockets close
together, 4794-1 can be used in the same
way as twin camshaft sprockets, to retain
timing.
Illustration
• The 4794-1 locking device fits into the
teeth of the camshaft sprocket / injection
pump sprocket providing strong lock, in
parallel fit or lateral/off-set positioning.
Illustration
Special Features of 4794-1:
• Variable pitch feature: this design incor-
porates adjustable arms which extend or
retract to cover various camshaft sprock-
et/injection pump sprocket diameters and
tooth pitches.
• Ratchet locking handles: Two ratch-
et-style handles for secure hold for the
locking device in a restricted space.
• Applications for timing belt pulleys with
flanged edges. The tool's slotted fixing
arms allow use on timing belt pulleys with
flanged edges.
Application:
• Slacken both ratchet handles and close
the fixing arms together and in that
position place them between the camshaft
sprockets. Insert the cams of the left fixing
arm into the teeth and move the right fixing
arm as horizontally as possible to bring it
into position at the right camshaft sprocket.
• Tighten the ratchet handles to give firm
hold. Check that all four fixing arm cams are
fully engaged into the sprocket teeth.
