6. HEAT CONTROL KNOB (Part No. 4160). This
knob is located in the center of the control
box and has been calibrated at the factory. To
increase heat, turn the heat control knob in a
clockwise direction; to reduce the heat, turn
in a counter-clockwise direction. When
starting the unit, turn the knob to the "10"
position (maximum setting). When the gauge
reaches operating pressure of 17-21 psi, turn
the knob counter-clockwise to reduce heat.
Maintain a close watch of the pressure gauge,
and adjust heat up or down as appropriate.
The heat control knob determines the
duration that the thermoswitch contact points
remain open and closed. The thermoswitch
reacts to temperature changes and is
controlled by the manner in which the heat
control knob is operated. Whenever current is
going into the heating element, the red pilot
light will be illuminated and when current is
not being used, the pilot light will be out. The
control knob is fastened to the shaft of the
thermoswitch by a D spring clip. The shaft of
the thermoswitch has a flat surface to accom-
modate this clip.
7. STERILIZATION PERIOD. The sterilization
period begins when the pressure steam
gauge needle registers in the green sterili-
zation band shown on the face of the gauge.
The sterilization pressure range is 17-21 PSI.
AT THIS TIME YOU BEGIN THE TIMING OF
THE STERILIZATION CYCLE AND CONTINUE
TIMING FOR NOT LESS THAN 35 MINUTES.
8. MECHANICAL BELL TIMER. (Part No.
4190)The 50X and 75X electric sterilizers have a
mechanical timer located on the left side of the
electrical control unit. This is a MECHANICAL
timer and is NOT connected in anyway to the
electric circuits on the unit. It will not turn the
unit on or off.
After the pressure range is 17-21 PSI per step
#7, set the timer for the desired time by turning
the knob clockwise to the desired time. The
timer is marked in 0, 20, 40 and 60 minute
positions. The marks between these times are
set in five minute increments. After the set time
has expired, the bell will ring for approximately
3 to 5 seconds, alerting you that the sterilization
period is completed. Proceed to step 9. YOU
MUST MANUALLY TURN OFF THE UNIT. THE
TIMER WILL NOT TURN OFF THE UNIT.

9. At the end of the sterilization period, turn the
on/off toggle switch to "off" and move the
toggle on the control valve to an upright
(vertical) position so that the steam is
permitted to escape. When the toggle is in an
upright position, the steam will escape at
maximum. To avoid touching the hot toggle,
you may use any object such as a pencil or
hot pad, etc., to move the toggle from the
closed to open (vertical) position. When the
pressure gauge indicates zero, loosen the
wing nuts evenly by turning two opposite
wing nuts counter-clockwise at one time.
Having removed all wing nuts from the slots
in the cover, you may lift the cover slightly
and turn the cover counter-clockwise for easy
removal. The inner container may then be
removed from sterilizer for unloading.
To start another sterilization cycle, repeat
procedure as outlined.
If the sterilizer is not going to be used again,
before putting the unit away, all water should
be emptied from the unit and the unit be
thoroughly dried inside. It is recommended
that the water be poured out of the unit while
the bottom is still warm, as the heat will help
dry the unit out, if you leave the cover off for
15 minutes before placing the cover on the
unit for storage. For storage purposes, it is
only necessary to slightly tighten the wing
nuts enough to hold the cover on the bottom.
When storing, it is recommended that the
control valve be left in a vertical position to
permit air to circulate into the bottom.
