2 Warning and safety instructions

For safety and functional reasons, the laboratory hot plate may as a general rule only be opened by
authorised persons; this means, for example, that only trained specialists may carry out any work on the
electrical system. In case of unauthorised manipulation of the laboratory hot plate and negligent or
deliberate damage, the warranty will lapse.
The laboratory hot plate complies with Protection Class II. It has been manufactured and tested in
accordance with DIN VDE 0411, Part 1 (EN 61 010, Part 1) and DIN VDE 0411, Part l 2-010 (EN 61 010,
Part 2-010), safety measures for electric heating devices. It has left the plant in perfect safety condition. In
order to maintain this condition and ensure safe operation, the user must observe the information and
warnings given in these operating instructions.
Prior to switching on, care must be taken to ensure that the voltage indicated on the rating plate of the
laboratory hot plate matches the mains voltage.
Please make sure that connecting cables do not come into contact with the hot heating zone or any other
hot objects. The laboratory hot plate must be kept at least 0.5 m away from inflammable substances.
The decoration marks the centre of the heating surface. However, the surface outside the decorated area
also becomes hot.
Please prevent hard objects from falling on the glass-ceramic surface. Point impact loads may lead to
breakage of the glass-ceramic surface.
If cracks, fissures or breaks should appear in the glass-ceramic surface and if there is reason to assume
that safe operation is no longer possible, the laboratory hot plate must be put out of operation (remove
mains cable) and secured against inadvertent usage.
The temperature of the heating surfaces can reach max. 555 ° C. Therefore:
CAUTION:
Risk of deflagration, explosion and fire when heating flammable liquids!
!
Use only to heat up liquids with a flash point exceeding 580 ° C!
Be aware of increased risk of ignition of hot liquids!
Always cover vessel to prevent hot liquids from coming into contact with the heating surface
(e.g. by liquids splashing or boiling over or through escaping gases)!
The SI Analytics laboratory hot plate must be set up and connected in such as way that
maximum possible safety is guaranteed for people and materials.
If the laboratory hot plate is used outside the laboratory, e.g. in the office, workshop or home, it is
important to bear in mind that the device may give rise to hazards typical of such areas. Do not use the
laboratory hot plates to heat rooms (improper use!).
! The surface of the heating devices becomes hot during operation, so please be careful: such devices
should generally be kept out of reach of children, in particular infants.
! Food prepared using fat or oil (e.g. French fries) should only be prepared under supervision. Food
should not be prepared in aluminium foil or plastic containers on the hot heating surfaces! Such
substances, especially sugar in either solid or liquid form (foods containing sugar), will melt and become
stuck and could cause cracks or breaks in the glass-ceramic surface when cooling down.
Avoid repeatedly burning in residues or boiled-over liquids. Calcareous deposits will harm the glass-
ceramic surface.
If the heating surface can no longer be switched off owing to a defect in the sensor control, immediately
disconnect the laboratory hot plate from the mains and remove the mains cable.
