You need to follow these steps to begin to enjoy the benefits of
networking:
1
Connect the 3Com USB Network Interface to your PC, following
all of the steps in the Installation Guide (supplied).
2
Install the other components of your network as required.
A basic network configuration is shown in Figure 1. In this exam-
ple, the 3Com USB Network Interface is shown connected directly
to the USB port on the back of PC-1. If you have no spare USB
ports of the back of your PC, you can use a USB Hub. The USB
Hub increases the number of USB ports available on that PC.
If you attach the 3Com USB Network Interface to your PCs
through a USB Hub, that Hub must be self-powered.
The Ethernet Hub is at the centre of the network shown in
Figure 1. We recommend that you use an OfficeConnect Ethernet
Hub (such as the TP4) which comes with the OfficeConnect
Network Assitant CD-ROM. The Network Assistant is a graphical,
step-by-step guide to network setup, expansion and problem
solving. It will guide even the most novice user through every
stage of network ownership.
3
Set up Windows 98 networking on your PC.
Assign Computer Name and Workgroup:
From the Windows 98 desktop, click Start—Settings—Control
Panel—Network. Click the Identification tab.
The Computer Name identifies the PC on the network. It can be
any name, but it must be unique from the other PCs on the
ETWORK
network. For Workgroup, enter a name for this network. It can be
any name but it must be the same for all PCs on the network.
Turn on File and Print Sharing:
From the Windows 98 desktop, click Start—Settings—Control
Panel—Network. Click the Configuration tab. Click File and Print
Sharing... Select the appropriate boxes.
Make the drive shared (if required).
From the Windows 98 desktop, click My Computer. Right click the
approriate drive. Click Sharing. Select Shared As and select the
required option.
Make the local printer shared (if required)
Ensure the printer is connected correctly. From the Windows 98
desktop click Start—Settings—Printers. Right-click on the printer
icon and select Sharing. Select Shared As, and select the required
option
4
Repeat step 3 as necessary for other PCs that you want to connect
to your network.
5
If you want to configure a network that includes a variety of oper-
ating systems, not just Windows 98, you may need to assign IP
addresses. In this case, you should contact the vendor of your
operating system for further instructions.
