10.3 Stairs and height differences (advice on how best to deal with them)

For commode chair RC240-xx, take stairs (from around 1 cm up to 3 cm) in reverse, with rear
wheels of ø 600 mm
WARNING!
• These techniques are only suitable for expert users of self-propelled commode
chairs. Ask a carer to assist you in all other cases!
WARNING!
• Do not use this technique when the difference in height is over 10 cm!
ASCENDING: Go up to the curb of the pavement or the step you want to ascend. Balance the
wheelchair on the rear wheels to lift the front wheels just enough to rest them on the edge
of the obstacle. Bend forwards from the waist and firmly push the handrail on the rear wheels
forward. Continue pushing until the rear wheels have gone over the obstacle.
DESCENDING: Follow the procedure in reverse to descend. Position the rear side of the
wheelchair in front of the obstacle, grip the handrail on the rear wheels firmly and slowly
descend the step or the obstacle, then balance the wheelchair on the rear wheels in a manner
to raise the front wheels slightly and carefully complete the descent.
