Electrically Power Assisted Cycles (EPAC)

EPAC is the abbreviation used by the European Standard EN 15194:2009
and derives from the initials of "Electrically Power Assisted Cycles", and
has the same characteristics as the "assisted pedal bicycles".
Therefore, the functional features requested by Italian and European
Standards for the Electrically Power Assisted Cycles (EPAC) are:
the electric motor must only assist when the cyclist pedals
forward;
  the assistance cuts-out as soon as the cyclist stops pedaling
forward or acts on the brake levers;
the assistance reduces progressively and cuts-out completely
when the vehicle reaches the maximum speed of 25 km/h.
The assisted pedal cycles are excluded from the European Directive
2002/24/CE relative to type approval of motorized vehicles with two or
three wheels. Therefore, compliance with and maintenance of the main
requisites allow your EPAC to be used according to the regulations valid
for velocipedes. Bicycle lanes can be used and helmets, insurance or
registration plates are not compulsory.
