2 Description and function
2.1 Designated use
The knee joint 3A1800 KINEGEN.air-active is to be used solely for prosthetic
care of lower extremities.
2.2 Construction
The knee joint 3A1800 KINEGEN.air-active is a polycentric knee joint with
pneumatic swing phase control and integrated extension assist.
The knee joint consists of a lower joint section and a upper joint section,
both of which are moveable connected by means of front and rear joint
levers. The proximal joint connection is effected by an pyramid adapter;
and distally by a tube support with tube clamp, (diameter) Ø 30 mm.
a) Joint stability during stance phase
The placement of the joint axes ensures that during extension in stance
phase, the centre of the momentary rotation point (D) is above the joint and
behind the weight bearing line (fig. 1a). Therefore, the stance phase safety is
determined solely by the prosthesis set-up.
b) Joint dynamics during swing phase
The swing phase can be introduced in a controlled way with low energy
input. Due to the specific placement of the joint axes a shortening effect
of the distal prosthesis length is achieved while flexing and swinging the
knee joint in the swing phase. This helps to prevent stumbling significantly.
The flexion characteristics of the multi-joint chain results into a natural gait
pattern and provides energy-efficient walking.
The regulation for flexion- and extension resistance during the swing phase
is achieved by a powerful valve-controlled dual-chamber pneumatic system.
An integrated extension assist supports safe flexion at the end of the
swing phase.
