VARIA 230V UNI / VARIA 24V
Field of application
The VARIA operator is to be used exclusively for opening and closing
bottom-hung, top-hung outward-opening, up-and-over and skylight
windows.
It's ideal for bottom-hung and top-hung outward opening windows
with height of at least 50 cm. The use of the product for purposes
other than those allowed is expressly forbidden. Use of the operator
for other applications must be authorized by GIESSE and is subject to
technical testing of the application.
Description of the product
Electric operator with chain and internal gathering, equipped
1
with limit microswitch, removable terminal block, window
closing warning light and a protection device which stops the
operator in case of overload (both in VARIA).
The operator is also fitted with accessories and drilling templates for
fitting the operator to the window and special brackets for top-hung
outward opening and bottom-hung windows.
Chain stroke (factory-set to 300 mm) can be adjusted from 90 to 400
mm.
The chain is treated against oxidation with Dacromet coating for
protection in the harshest conditions.
The operator is produced in two versions:
- VARIA 230V UNI (functioning: 230Volt A.C.)
- VARIA 24V (functioning: 24Volt D.C.)
The VARIA 24V operator is to be used together with GIESSE "EFC"
type electronic control units (see the catalogue).

Installation (Ref. Instructions for the fitter pag. 4)
2
● The operator must be installed by specialised technical
personnel.
● The operator must be installed when the window is closed.
● Disconnect the electrical power supply during installation.
● Check that the hinges and hardware used allow the operator to
open
fully. If not, the hardware may be damaged by the drive or thrust force
of the operator (see stroke adjustment).
a. With a pencil, identify and mark the midline M of the window.
Fit the self-adhesive drilling template 9 (draw.1 or draw.4) to the
window and drill the holes using a drill and drill bits with a diameter
corresponding to the template.
b. Remove the self-adhesive template. Apply fitting 4 (for top-hung
windows) or bracket 5 (for bottom-hung windows) on the window.
Apply support 2 on the frame.
NB. Use the screws 7 supplied for aluminium windows. For fixing on
wood use diam.
4.8 wood screws of suitable length for the thickness.
c. The operator is supplied with a stroke of 300 mm but can be
adjusted as follows:
Adjusting the stroke using a cam
To modify the stroke of the operator chain, connect the operator to the
mains (see paragraph 3) or use the operator test cable (cod.
04793000 only for Varia 230V UNI), and then:
1. Open the door 15.
2. Power up the operator, find out the stroke setting fitting 16 (the
plastic insert on the chain) and remove it using a thin screwdriver.

9. Drilling template (1+1)
10. Guide cover fitting (x1)
11. Hexagon nut and wa sher (x1)
12. Cable clamp (x1)
13. Terminal board (x1)
14. Stroke end indicator (x1)
Instructions booklet (x1)
3. Extract the chain by a length A equal to the stroke C required, as
indicated in Tab.B. Example: if the entire chain remains inside, that is
A=0, the stroke is 90 mm.
4. Fit the stroke setting fitting 16.
5. Close the door 15.
Note: for bottom-hung applications, adjust the stroke before
fitting the operator.
WARNING! Make sure that the open/close limit switch is
working correctly in order to avoid the risk of possible damages
to the motor.
Permanently affix a label near the operator indicating manual
release of the device. Label not supplied.
d. Remove guide cover insert 10, fit the operator on support 2. Close
the window, applying light pressure to guarantee tightness of the
seals. Then screw down chain front pin 3 complete with nut and
toothed lock washer 11 and adjust the position at fitting 4 or bracket
5. Fix the chain with fixing spring 6.
WARNING! It's important to block the front pin 3 in position
using the nut and washer 11.
e. Fix the operator to support 2 inserting lockpin 8. Ensure that the
operator reaches the limit switch positions correctly without being
obstructed.
Correct closing of the frame and stopping of the motor are
signaled by lighting up of the red indicator (14).
NB. The operator is supplied in the limit switch closed position.
Possible limitation of stroke for top-hung
Find your window data H, P and C.
Calculate the Force F necessary for opening the window using the
following formule.
P
H
C
The calculated value F must result equal or lower than
the value F in the table beside for the stroke C of your
windows. If the value calculated is superior, it will be
necessary to reduce the chain stroke until you obtain a
correct value.
Nb: intermediate measures of the stroke are
possible beside those in the table.
Nb: for the bottom-hung applications the force of
the operator is always 300 N.
Electrical connection (pag. 14)
Warning: injury or death - electrocution hazard.
3
Disconnect the power supply to the operators before
connecting the operators or the system.
Warning: There must always be a multi-polar mains switch
with a minimum contact opening of 3 mm and a differential of 0.030 A
upstream of the operator control line.
Check the cross-section of the power supply cable: it must have
adequate dimensions for the absorption of the operator.
Power supply cable with ordinary rubber sheath, Max diameter 7.9
mm (designation 60245 IEC 53).
Unscrew the two screws 17.
The electrical connections as indicated in draw.9.
The terminals are not to be used for connecting flexible cables with
washers unless the wire ends are fitted with a device for use with
screw terminals.
The electrical system must comply with current standards.
Nb: To ensure the system is safe, use a spring return push-
button (dead man) or a power supply which is timed for the time
required for movement.
