When to use your breast pump
To produce a reserve of breast milk to be used in case of an absence or separation, your return to work, or simply to hand over
to dad. Breast milk expressed with the breast pump can be collected directly, stored, frozen and reheated in the bottle supplied
(see chapter on conserving breast milk).
How to clean and sterilise your breast pump?
Before using the apparatus for the first time and after each usage, you should dismantle your breast pump and wash and ste-
rilize all the parts. Milk residues can damage the materials and lead to the development of bacteria.
To clean the different parts, run them under running water or put them through the dishwasher (the dishwasher however is not
recommended for cleaning the teat). The valves are particularly fragile; take care not to use anything that may damage it. Next,
sterilise the parts in a steriliser (electronic or microwave) or by boiling them in water for 5 minutes (ensure there is enough wa-
ter to prevent damage). It is not recommended to sterilise these parts directly in the microwave (that is, except for the micro-
wave steriliser) because this may damage the materials.
Important! Allow the sterilised parts to cool down sufficiently before reusing.
Also make sure that the parts are completely dry before assembling the breast pump.
How to prepare and assemble your breast pump (see Diagram B)
1. Place the lower end of the lever 4 (the part without the Tigex logo) in the opening of the diaphragm 5, so that the diaphragm
is positioned inside the slot of the lever.
2. Insert the diaphragm 5 into the upper part of the breast shield 6, making sure that the edges of the diaphragm is snugly slot-
ted inside the shield.
3. Slide the handle 1 between the lever 4 and the diaphragm 5 so that the lever goes into the slot 2. Next, position the head of
the lever inside the small space provided for it, on top of the handle 1.
4. Snap the handle fixture 3 into its anchor point 7.
5. Insert the anti-reflux valve 8 under the shield 6.
6. Screw the bottle 9 on under the shield 6.
How to use your breast pump (see Diagram C)
Using a breast pump may require a little practice and you may need to make several attempts. Do not feel discouraged if you
don't succeed the first time. If after several minutes you have not managed to express any milk, try again at another time. Un-
der no circumstances should using the breast pump be painful.
Before all usage, wash your hands thoroughly, wash and sterilise your breast pump and assemble it following the instructions
given in the previous section.
1. Place the shield 6 on the breast so that the nipple is in the centre. Ensure that there is no space between the shield and the
skin, in order to produce good suction. Always keep the breast pump upright if possible.
2. Hold the breast pump by placing your thumb under the shield and the other fingers on the lower part of the handle. Diagram
C2 illustrates 2 different hand positions: you are free to choose the one you find most comfortable.
3. Start by pumping the handle 1 with a regular action and then releasing it slowly. To trigger milk production, TIGEX recommends
that you begin with a fast action, and then adopt a slower, fuller action to express milk efficiently.
You can regulate suction strength by performing a fairly wide pumping action. The further you press the handle, the greater the
suction strength produced. To reduce suction strength therefore, do not press the pump handle as far.
4. When you have finished expressing the milk, carefully unscrew the bottle 9 from the shield 6. Ensure that the bottle is kept
upright.
