FUNCTION.The CHARGE function permits initial charging
of the battery at constant current with the value previously
set, for a maximum time of 10 hours. If the battery voltage is
particularly low, a fixed current of 2A will be delivered until
1.5 V/e is reached; once this threshold has been reached
this current until the end-of-charge limits for that particular
type of battery are reached. Once this time has elapsed, if
the battery has not reached a certain battery voltage level
(stored inside the microcontroller) a further 2 hours are
added after which the battery charge is switched off. If the
battery charger reaches the reference voltage before the
end of the 10 charging hours pre-set in the control circuit the
battery charger switches off without adding the extra
two hours.
The START function
VOLTAGE, automatically limiting the current to the pre-set
values with cycles lasting "5 sec ON" and "20 sec OFF".
Blinking of the STARTled indicates that this function is
enabled.
(CHARGE) Charge current selection key
This key is used to select the charge current level in
"CHARGE" mode .
The charge currents that can be set are
2/5/10/20/30 A
By setting the key to START, the current available is 170 A
for the model ST300.
(DISPLAY) Current/voltage key
Three different displays can be selected with this key:
- "I": the current delivered in Amps is displayed, both in
CHARGE and START;(ST 300)
- "V": in this position the display indicates the output voltage
to the battery in Volts;
ST 500-300
(ON) Switch-on Key
This key identified by "I" allows to deliver power to the
battery.
IMPORTANT: before pressing this button ensure that you
have previously performed all the required settings.
If the function selected with the key (I) is START, the battery
charger will begin to deliver starting current only when
requested by the vehicle.
(OFF) Switch-off Key
This key, identified by "O", interrupts delivery of the current
to the battery/batteries during charge or start.
WARNING: the machine is still powered.
(E) Battery charge status indicator key
The three leds indicate the battery status by reading its
voltage. The upper led indicates that the battery is charged
by reading a battery voltage equal to or higher than the end-
of-charge voltage. The middle led indicates that the battery
is still able to receive current but that the charge level is
acceptable. The lower led indicates that the battery is flat.
(F) Alarms and safety devices key
The equipment is protected against overloads, short circuits
and inversion of polarity by means of internal electronic
safety devices.
There are 3 leds:

FIG.B-C
STAND-BY power supply unit.

- No battery voltage
- Low battery voltage
= inversion of polarity.
All the alarm conditions prevent the delivery of
current to the battery except for the auxiliary power
supply unit which is equipped with independent
safety devices.
PRECAUTIONS:
The STARTRONIC battery-charger/starter is a
microprocessor controlled electronic device that is able to
protect the vehicle electronics from voltage surges that may
be generated when particularly flat or sulphated batteries
are being charged. In this case its protective capacity is
shown as it blocks the charge function every time the ON
key is pressed: a fraction of a second is sufficient to evaluate
the battery status and automatically discontinue charging
when there is evidence of dangerous voltage surge risks to
the automobile devices that are connected electrically to the
battery terminals.
WARNING: select the charge voltage in accordance with
the rated voltage of the battery to be charged.
CHARGING VERY FLA T OR SULPHATED BA TTERIES
WARNING: when charging in this situation the automobile
electronics are not protected therefore it is essential to
disconnect the battery from the vehicle. T o be able to charge
such batteries it is necessary to exclude the STARTRONIC
built-in protection against voltage surges that could destroy
the vehicle electronics.
Excluding this option implies that the battery can be
charged if and only if it is disconnected from the automobile
electronics.
To be able to charge without the support of the protections,
press the ON key for at least 5 seconds. Pressing the ON
key for more than 5 seconds causes the STARTRONIC to
enter an operating mode without checks on any voltage
surges that could be generated when the battery being
charged is in very poor condition: the charging process will
not stop until either the operator chooses to press the OFF
key or a preset time limit has been reached.
At the end of this stage, which is indicated by the flashing of
the general alarm LED, the STARTRONIC returns
automatically to protected operating mode which ensures
the elimination of voltage surge risks.
