wooden furniture. The speakers should radiate the sound from this hard area into the „softer"
parts of the room containing sound-absorbing elements such as upholstered furniture, carpets
and so on.
Make sure that there are no sound-absorbing obstacles between the speakers and your listening
position, as this will muffle the sound and impair your listening pleasure.
Install the speakers at least 1 metre away from your television set to avoid interference to the
TV picture by the magnetic fields. This restriction does not apply for MAGNAT home cinema
centre speakers, which are magnetically shielded so that they can be placed in the direct
vicinity of the television set (Fig. 2). Some other MAGNAT speakers are also shielded - plea-
se check the operating instructions and the labels on the back of the speaker before installing.
The speakers should also be installed at least 30 cm away from the side walls and 20 cm
from the rear wall. This prevents exaggerated „booming" basses and helps to produce more
balanced, detailed sound reproduction.
lf possible, bookshelf speakers should be installed so that the tweeters are on the same level
as the listeners' ears. lf you install the speakers in a wall unit take care to ensure that the fronts
of the speakers are flush with the front of the wall unit.
For best results you ean also use special speaker feet known as „spikes" to acoustically
isolate your speakers from the floor or shelf. This will produce a more precise and natural sound
without unpleasant resonances.
SETTING UP AND INSTALLING HOME CINEMA SYSTEMS
The three-dimensional drawing in Fig. (2) shows a typical configuration for a home cinema
setup in a living room, using two floor-standing speakers and a special centre speaker as the
front speakers. The ce -ntre and rear speakers (the „effect" speakers) are normally connected
to the Dolby surroundl sound decoder or amplifier, as shown in Fig. (3). Please study the
manufacturers' instruction manuals carefully before connecting the equipment.
SUBWOOFER/SATELLITE CONFIGURATIONS FOR STEREO
AND HOME CINEMA SYSTEMS
In subwoofer/satellite systems the frequency crossover networks are installed in the subwoo-
fer units. This makes it necessary to connect the amplifier to the inputs on the subwoofer. You
then connect the satellite speakers to the outputs on the subwoofer. The connection terminals
on the subwoofer unit are clearly labelled with Input and Output (Fig. 4). For optimum
performance the best position for the subwoofer is in the iniddle between the two stereo
satellites, but you can also locate it in other positions in the room if space considerations make
this necessary.
