exposure of piping, containing or having contained flammable refrigerant shall not
use any source of ignition in such a manner as to create a fire or explosion hazard. All
possible sources of ignition, including cigarette smoke, shall be kept at a sufficient
distance from the place of installation, repair, removal and disposal, during which
flammable refrigerant may possibly be released into the surrounding space. Before
work takes place, the area around the equipment should be inspected to ensure that
there is no fire or ignition hazard. No smoking" signs should be posted.
Ventilated area
ο
Ensure that the area is open to the air or adequately ventilated before entering the
system or performing hot work. Some degree of ventilation must be maintained
during the work. Ventilation should safely disperse any released refrigerant and
preferably expel it outside into the atmosphere. Extended period of non-use.
Checks in the area
ο
Prior to beginning work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks
are required to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimized. The following precautions
should be observed before work is performed on the refrigeration system. Extended
period of non-use.
Checks on refrigeration equipment
ο
When electrical components are modified, they must be suitable for their intended
use and meet the correct specification. At all times, the manufacturer's maintenance
and service guidelines must be followed. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer's
technical department for assistance.
The following controls should be applied to installations using flammable refrigerants:
Charge size is consistent with the size of the room in which the refrigerant-containing
parts are installed;
Machinery and ventilation outlets are functioning properly and are not obstructed;
If an indirect refrigeration circuit is used, the secondary circuit must be checked for
the presence of refrigerant;
Markings on equipment remain visible and legible. Illegible markings and signs must
be corrected;
Refrigeration piping or components are installed in a position where they are not
likely to be exposed to a substance that could corrode refrigerant-containing
components, unless the components are constructed of materials that are inherently
corrosion resistant or are adequately protected against corrosion.
Electrical Device Controls
ο
Repair and maintenance of electrical components shall include initial safety checks
and component inspection procedures. If there is a defect that could compromise
safety, no electrical power should be connected to the circuit until it has been
satisfactorily remedied. If the fault cannot be corrected immediately but continued
operation is necessary, a suitable temporary solution should be used. This situation
should be reported to the equipment owner so that all parties are aware of it.
Initial safety checks should include:
Capacitors are discharged: this must be done in a safe manner to avoid the
possibility of sparking;
