Removing the existing fuel pump
1.
Locate the existing fuel pump, often located at the front of the engine.
2. Open or remove the engine hatch cover and set aside.
3. Disconnect the battery cables.
4. For engines manufactured on or after 2000, remove the upper fuel pump
guard.
5. Position a fuel spill container under the pump and filter assembly.
6. Using one open-end wrench to hold the upper elbow, use a second open-
end wrench to remove the line nut for each of the following.
a. Remove the fuel inlet line at the filter bracket.
b. Remove the fuel outlet line at the top of the fuel pump.
7. Plug the fuel line to prevent additional fuel spillage.
8. Cut the plastic tie holding the electrical leads to the body of the fuel pump.
9. Unplug the electrical harness at the pump suppressor connector and move
the electrical harness out of the way.
10. Locate the pump end cap under the lower edge of the upper retaining
bracket.
11. While holding the pump end cap with a wrench, loosen the lock nut located
on top of the bracket and under the elbow. Unscrew the upper elbow.
NOTICE: Use a wrench to hold the pump end cap stationary when
loosening the lock nut. Not using the wrench will damage the internal o-ring
and could cause fuel leakage during fuel pump operation.
12. Remove the two fuel filter bracket mounting bolts.
13. Lifting the fuel pump, fuel filter bracket, and fuel filter as an assembly, slide the
q
pump out of the upper grommet. Take care to avoid spilling fuel.
14. Set the assembly down or carefully mount the bracket in a vise.
h
15. Holding the lower pump end cap with a wrench, unscrew the filter bracket-to-
pump adapter.
2
Installing the new fuel pump
1.
Slide a new o-ring over the threads of the filter bracket-to-pump adapter until
it rests on the upper side of the hex nut.
j
2. Screw the filter bracket-to-pump adapter/bracket assembly into the fuel
pump while holding the lower end cap. Use two wrenches, one on the pump
and one on the fitting.
NOTICE: Use a wrench to hold the pump end cap stationary when
tightening the filter bracket-to-pump adapter. Not using the wrench will
damage the internal o-ring and could cause fuel leakage during fuel pump
operation.
3. Tighten the filter bracket-to-pump to 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-14 Nm).
4. Slide the assembly up through the upper grommet in the retaining bracket
and position it so the mounting holes line up on the bracket.
5. Tighten the fuel filter bracket mounting bolt to 20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm).
6. Thread the upper lock nut onto the upper elbow until it reaches the underside
of the fitting.
7. Slip on the washer and a new o-ring.
8. While holding the end cap, thread the upper elbow into the top of the fuel
pump until it stops and then back it out just enough to align with the fuel line.
9. Connect the fuel outlet line and tighten it securely.
