BIKE SAFETY CHECKS
A safety check of your bike is essential to ensure your safety while riding. Here is a checklist of key items to
check regularly:
Brakes
• Check that the front and rear brakes are working properly.
• Check that the lines, cables and hoses are not worn or damaged.
• Check brake pads for wear and replace if necessary.
Minimum pad thickness = 0.5mm.
Tyres
• Check the tyre pressure and make sure it is correct (Refer to the "settings and basic values" table, &p. 62].
• Look for cuts, tears or sharp objects in the tyres that could cause a puncture.
• Check the wear of the tyres and replace them if they are too worn.
Transmission
• Make sure the chain is clean and properly lubricated.
• Check the operation of derailleurs and gears.
• Check sprockets and chain links for wear.
Steering
• Check that the handlebars and stem are tight and free of play.
• Make sure the fork turns freely without jerking or rubbing.
Suspension
• Check the fork and shock absorber pressure. (Refer to the "settings and basic values" table, &p. 62].
• Check sag, compression and rebound adjustments.
• Check for oil leaks.
Bearings
• Check wheel hub, crankset and steering bearings for play, hard spots or abnormal noise.
