Important Points to observe
when taking your own blood pressure
Always take your blood pressure in a resting po-
sition. Two measurements per day are recom-
mended – in the morning on rising and in the
evening when the body is relaxed after the days
work.
Your blood pressure should be taken sitting
relaxed and comfortably in an arm chair or at a
table where you can support your arm in a
slightly angled position.
The measurement is taken on the free upper
arm. Care has to be taken that there is no con-
striction from pushed-back sleeves (if necessary
remove garment).
The arm has to be kept perfectly still while the
blood pressure is taken.
Between successive measurements an interval
of at least 2 minutes is to be allowed.
The measurement should not last longer than
two minutes.
It is quite normal to experience variations in
blood pressure values. Even with repeated tests
there can be marked differences. Single or
repeated measurements are therefore no indi-
cation of the true blood pressure. A reliable
evaluation is only possible when you take regu-
lar measurements under the same conditions
and enter the values in the enclosed test card.
Taking your own blood pressure does not mean
Therapy. Never change any given doses of
medication prescribed by your general prac-
titioner.
Persons suffering any kind of heart defect or
those with pace makers are advised to consult
their GP, as in these instances altered or in-
correct blood pressure readings can occur.
Using your blood pressure monitor in the vicinity
of strong electromagnetic fields (ie Ultra violet
units, Mobile telephones) can also cause faulty
readings (page 32-34).
