4.3 Adjusting expiratory resistance

The pressure gauge (6) can be used to adjust expiratory resistance and to
monitor the resistance constantly throughout PEP therapy. You must follow
the instructions of your physician or physiotherapist for adjusting the expira-
tory resistance.
• Follow the steps described in Chapter 4.2 to assemble the PARI PEP
System.
To obtain the best possible adjustment of
expiratory resistance, you must not breathe
through your nose. To prevent this, please use
the nose clip (5).
Figure B:
Adjust expiratory resistance as follows, as instructed by your physician or
physiotherapist:
• Remove the PEP upper part (2) until the engaging notch "x" releases
catch "y" on the PEP II lower part (4).
The PEP upper part can now be easily twisted in both directions.
• Line up the appropriate opening in the PEP upper part opposite the open-
ing in the PEP lower part.
• Push the PEP upper part onto the PEP lower part until the engaging
notch "x" for the selected aperture is engaged with catch "y".
• Close your lips firmly around the mouthpiece (1) and breathe in. When you
breathe out, you can read the expiratory resistance on the pressure gauge.
If the pressure displayed is not the pressure you want, choose a smaller or
larger aperture as directed by your physician.
• Repeat this procedure until you achieve the desired expiratory resistance.
Make a note of the corresponding aperture (see the markings on the PEP
upper part 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; 4.5 or 5.0).
