Appendix B – Information about antennas
There are two types of Tru-Test antenna, one for sheep and one for cattle.
The two types of antenna have been optimised for a particular purpose. In general, the operating range and operating area of the Tru-Test XRP EID
Reader System increase with power supplied to the antenna, and antenna size (area).
It is very important to choose the correct antenna for your specific application.
This graph demonstrates the operating range of the two types of antenna under ideal conditions (i.e. no metal near the antenna and negligible
environmental noise) and with the tag in optimum orientation (rotated so that maximum read rate is obtained). A common 30 mm coin shaped FDX
tag has been used:
Notes:
The operating range will vary depending on tag type, tag rotation, antenna type, environment (metal) and antenna voltage.
In most real-life situations, tag orientation is not optimum because it is on an animal's ear and therefore not angled in an ideal way for the XRP
Reader to read the tag.
Because the antenna is often mounted on the side of a crush/chute, weigh crate or drafter, much of the operating range is outside the area
where you want the antenna to read tags.
