Introduction
Power supply
The XRP Reader can be powered by mains power, using the power adaptor supplied, or by a 12 V battery, using the battery leads supplied.
The unit operates well from a12 Volt automotive battery, although a marine battery is far less prone to permanent damage if the battery is not
recharged at least every few days. Do not connect the XRP Reader to an automotive battery while it is in a running vehicle. To ensure good
performance under minimum supply voltage conditions (11.6 V), length and gauge of 12 V wiring and minimum voltage of the external power supply
must be carefully considered.
If the voltage supplied to the XRP Reader is too low (<11 V), the red LED will flash indicating that a power fault is present. If using a 12 V battery,
disconnect the XRP Reader from it to prevent permanent damage to the battery.
Antenna
An antenna allows the XRP Reader to read EID tags. The antenna creates a magnetic field to energize the EID tag and it receives the very small
signals transmitted by the tag.
Only a Tru-Test antenna should be used with the XRP Reader. There are two types of antenna available, one for cattle and one for sheep. The
antenna type should be chosen to suit the particular application. For more information, see Appendix A – Specifications on page 12.
Troubleshooting
The XRP Reader continually monitors the state of the antenna. The green LED and the buzzer are used to indicate a fault. See
on
page 9.
Auto-tune
Changes in the operating environment of the antenna, such as temperature and moving or stationary metal objects, can affect the tuning of the
antenna and reduce the performance of the XRP Reader. To counteract this effect, the XRP Reader is equipped with a sophisticated self-tune (or
auto-tune) facility. The XRP Reader initiates an auto-tune 10 to 20 times every second (each ISO-cycle) and is optimally tuned within 150
milliseconds.
Indicators
The red LED acts as a 'power on' indicator. When power is supplied to the XRP Reader, the red LED illuminates.
The green LED acts as a 'tag read' indicator. When an EID tag is read successfully, the green LED illuminates and the
buzzer sounds for half a second.
Troubleshooting
The LEDs are also used to indicate faults with the antenna or the power supply. See
on page 9.
COM port
The serial communication port (COM port) outputs tag data to the weigh scale indicator or other field device.
The COM port also allows you to connect the XRP Reader to a PC in order to configure the XRP Reader using the CONFiG XRP software application.
CONFiG XRP may also be used when diagnosing problems with the XRP Reader. For information about using the CONFiG XRP software, see page 8.
Synchronisation
The Synch model of XRP Reader has a synchronisation option. The Standard model does not have this feature. The synchronisation feature should be
used when multiple XRP Readers are in close proximity. Without synchronisation, performance of readers within 50 m (150 ft) of each other will likely
be reduced.
Up to five XRP Readers can be synchronised, but each reader must have its own weigh scale indicator attached. See the diagram on page 6.
A Synch Cable is required to connect readers together via the synch ports. It can be ordered separately from Tru-Test.
For more information about synchronisation, contact Tru-Test and request the technical bulletin ‚XRP Reader Synchronisation‛.
Dual antennas
If an increased operating area is required, two antennas can be connected to a single XRP Reader using a Dual Antenna Adaptor (Tru-Test part
number 816668). This allows two antennas to be connected to the XRP Reader's antenna port.
Caution!
Do not simply parallel up the antenna wires. This will result in loss of performance and may cause damage to the XRP Reader!
