Remove chips and similar material only with the
machine at standstill.
Caution must be exercised when driving screws
into hard materials (driving screws with metric or
imperial threads into steel)! The screw head may
break or a high reverse torque may build up on the
handle.
Danger - electrical voltage! The
connecting socket (9) is designed exclu-
sively to supply current to the Metabo
Dust Extraction Unit IDR. Do not insert
objects into the connecting socket (9) -
there is a danger of electric shocks and short
circuits!
Work only with the additional handle correctly
installed.
Always hold the machine with both hands using
the handles provided, stand securely and concen-
trate.
A damaged or cracked side handle must be
replaced. Never operate a machine with a
defective side handle.
The thread for screwing in the additional handle
can become hot after long periods of operation.
Dust from material such as paint containing lead,
some wood species, minerals and metal may be
harmful. Contact with or inhalation of the dust may
cause allergic reactions and/or respiratory
diseases to the operator or bystanders.
Certain kinds of dust are classified as carcinogenic
such as oak and beech dust especially in conjunc-
tion with additives for wood conditioning (chro-
mate, wood preservative). Material containing
asbestos must only be treated by specialists.
- To achieve a high level of dust collection, use a
suitable Metabo vacuum cleaner together with
this tool (Dust Extraction Unit IDR).
- The work place must be well ventilated.
- The use of a dust mask of filter class P2 is
recommended.

6 Special Product Features

• BHE 20 IDR:
- Removable, integrated dust extraction system
(IDR dust extraction system) for dust-free
drilling (up to dia. 16 mm, drill bit length up to
160 mm) without additional dust extractor or
hose; 100% extraction performance inde-
pendently of the speed; filter can be removed
for cleaning
- Fluted filter can be removed without tools for
cleaning; this results in a long service life
- Specially long service life of fluted filter with
compressed air cleaning
- Sealing cap of the suction nozzle and moulded
seal can be replaced without tools
• Optimised weight distribution thanks to L-
shape.
• Scaffold hook with simple snap-in connection
(see Accessories chapter) for safely hanging up
the tool on scaffolding or a ladder.
• Single-button operation:
One button is all it takes to switch between
drilling and impact drilling.
• Metabo S-automatic safety clutch:
If the tool jams or catches, the power supply to
the motor is restricted. Due to the strong force
which can arise, always hold the machine with
both hands using the handles provided, stand
securely and concentrate.
7 Commissioning
Before plugging in, check to see that the
rated mains voltage and mains frequency,
as stated on the rating label, match with your
power supply.
7.1 Assembly of additional handle
For safety reasons, always use the
additional handle (3)supplied.
Insert the additional handle (3) in the thread (2) (on
the left or right machine side) and tighten firmly.

Switching On and Off

To start the machine, press the trigger switch (7).
The speed can be changed using the trigger
switch.
