Preparation for Installation of the Cable (continued)
It is recommended that the cable is insulated using 1" fiberglass, foam or equivalent insulation. The insulation
should be water proof if exposed to weather or buried. The addition of the insulation will greatly improve
freeze protection capability and energy efficiency of any installation; the associated energy saving and
enhanced pipe freeze protection will more than offset the small cost of the insulation. If uninsulated, the
water pipe should be buried in at least 15 cm (6") of topsoil or sand.
In straight pipe installations where cable is being pushed downwards, up to 30 m (100 ft) of lubricated cable
could be pushed in the pipe. Longer pipe lengths or pipes with multiple bends will usually require the cable
to be pulled into the pipe and may also require one or more plumbing fittings to be installed along the pipe
route to allow the use of a fish tape or rope for pulling the heater cable into the pipe.
