Scope of supply:
1x bottom triple clamp (1)
1x top triple clamp (2)
1x steering stem (3)
1x tapered roller bearing (4)
1x O-ring support (5)
6x hex collar screws M8x30 (6)
Assembly
Support the cleaned motorcycle on the frame using the lift stand special tool
(62529055000) so that the front wheel is raised. Remove the front wheel,
headlamp mask, front spoiler, handlebar and brake caliper bracket. Remove
the fork and the upper triple clamp.
WHEN THE UPPER TRIPLE CLAMP IS REMOVED, IT IS VERY EASY FOR THE FORK
TO DIP DOWN.
Ensure that lines are not kinked. Pull off the O-ring, protective ring and bearing.
Pull the lower triple clamp off toward the bottom together with the steering
stem. Ensure that dirt does not get into the steering head.
Grease the bearing of the new triple clamp (for example, with Motorex
Long Therm 2000), reassemble the vehicle with the triple clamp in
reverse order and adjust the steering head bearing. Use tightening torques
according to the torque list in the owner's manual.
Check the steering head bearing and adjust.
The play in the steering head bearing should be checked regularly. To per-
form the check, support the motorcycle on the frame using the lift stand
(62529055000)
so that the front wheel is raised. Attempt to move the fork to and fro. There
should be no detectable play. To adjust it, loosen the 2 clamp screws (7)
and the steering head screw (8) of the upper triple clamp. Turn the steering
head nut (9) until there is no more play.
Specification: steering head nut M28x1 12 Nm.
Attachment for torque wrench (58429094100).
Never tighten the steering head screw all the way as this will damage the
bearings. Using a plastic hammer, lightly knock against the upper triple clamp
to prevent distortion. Tighten the 2 clamp screws (7) with 17 Nm and tighten
the steering head screw (8) with 40 Nm.
IF THE STEERING HEAD BEARING IS NOT FREE OF PLAY, THE HAND-
LING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MOTORCYCLE BECOME UNSTABLE.
YOU CAN MORE EASILY LOSE CONTROL OVER THE MOTORCYCLE.
IF THE MOTORCYCLE IS OPERATED FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME
WITH PLAY IN THE STEERING HEAD BEARING, THE BEARINGS AND
CONSEQUENTLY THE BEARING SEATS IN THE FRAME WILL BE
DESTROYED.
The steering head bearings should be greased at least once a year (e.g. with
Motorex Long Therm 2000).
