5 Operation with DMX Controller
To control the LEDs connected via a light con-
troller with DMX512 protocol, the CU-4DMX is
equipped with four DMX control channels:

5.1 DMX connection

For the DMX connection, RJ45 jacks with the fol-
lowing pin configuration are available:
Pins 1, 2
Pins 3, 5, 7
ground
DMX -
For connection to DMX units with 3-pole XLR
jacks / plugs use the matching XLR adapter cable
supplied (XLR pin configuration: 1 = ground,
2 = DMX-, 3 = DMX+). Several CU-4DMX can be
connected with each other by interconnecting
their adapter cables.
When using longer cables, special cables for high
data flow should be used. Standard microphone
cables with screening and a minimum cross sec-
tion of 2 × 0,22 mm
2
and with a capacity as low as
possible can only be recommended for a total
cable length of up to 100 m. For cable lengths
exceeding 150 m it is recommended to insert a
DMX level matching amplifier (e. g. SR-103DMX
from "img Stage Line").

Control programmes
1) Connect the DMX input (2) to the DMX output
of the light controller.
2) Connect the DMX output (1) to the DMX input
of the next CU-4DMX or the next DMX-con-
trolled unit. Connect its output again to the
input of the following unit etc., until all DMX
units are connected in a chain.
3) To prevent interference when transmitting sig-
nals, for long cables or for a great number of
units connected in series, the DMX output of
the last DMX unit of the chain should be termi-
nated with a 120 Ω resistor (> 0.3 W): Insert a
corresponding terminating plug (e. g. DLT-123
from "img Stage Line") into the XLR jack of the
last unit (or into the XLR inline jack of the
adapter cable for a CU-4DMX as the last unit).

5.2 Adjusting the start address

DMX +
For operating the CU-4DMX with a light controller,
adjust the DMX start address for its first DMX
channel. The following DMX channels are then
automatically assigned to the following addresses.
Example: For start address 5 for the first chan-
nel, the channels 2 to 4 are assigned to the
addresses 6 to 8. The address 9 is the next
possible free start address for the following
DMX-controlled unit.
The start address is adjusted as a binary number
via the DIP switch block (7). A place value is
assigned to each of the switches according to the
binary code. By addition of the place values of
the switches set to the upper position the start
address will result.
Press the button repeatedly to switch over between the programmes of a line.

After adjusting the start address, switch on the
power supply for the CU-4DMX. The LEDs con-
nected can now be operated via the light controller.
