2. BLOOD PRESSURE

Blood pressure varies considerably throughout the day and in hypertensive individuals these
variations are even more pronounced. It is lower in the morning and increases in the afternoon and
evening. It decreases during sleep. Blood pressure is lower in summer than in winter and increases

Note: One or two readings will not provide a true indication of your normal blood pressure. It is important
to take regular, daily measurements and to keep accurate records. Communicating your findings to your
doctor can be a valuable aid in diagnosing and preventing potential health problem.
In 2013, the European Society of Hypertension defined a blood pressure classification shown in the
table below. Nevertheless, this classification is just a general guide, as blood pressure varies from one
person to another, based on age, weight, and health.
