DEVICE DESCRIPTION
®
The Mityvac
reusable obstetrical vacuum extraction pump delivers the
vacuum needed to aid in delivery of the fetus in both vaginal or
Cesarean births. It is hand-held, manually operated and may be used in
the proximity of oxygen. The Mityvac reusable obstetrical vacuum pump
may be used either inside or outside of the sterile field.
Tubing
Remover
quickly
releases tubing
once delivery is
complete.
Pump Vacuum
Nozzle
connects to
tubing.
Trigger
vacuum
release
allows the operator
to reduce the
vacuum gradually
or release it rapidly.
CAUTION
U.S. Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order
of a physician.
Vacuum gauges can be rendered inaccurate during shipment
despite care taken in packaging. Gauge calibration must be
checked before each use.
The Mityvac reusable obstetrical vacuum pump is
manufactured and individually tested in strict adherence to
specifications. Any repair or maintenance performed by
anyone or entity other than the manufacturer could
compromise the integrity of the pump and is done so at the
risk and liability of the institution performing the work. All
Mityvac reusable obstetrical vacuum delivery pumps should
be thoroughly checked for proper performance and gauge
calibration prior to each use.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR MITYVAC PUMP
We recommend that you check the equipment and the calibration of the
gauge before each use.
The Mityvac reusable obstetrical vacuum pump may be disassembled
for ease of cleaning. The vacuum release is below the tubing
attachment point. Vacuum may be released either gradually or rapidly
by the amount of pull on the pump trigger.
Your pump's useful life may be extended if you follow these
precautions:
1.
Avoid drawing fluids into the pump during the procedure.
2.
Remember that the Mityvac reusable obstetrical vacuum pump is a
delicate instrument and should be handled accordingly.
3.
The Mityvac reusable obstetrical vacuum pump may be gas
sterilized or autoclaved.
4.
To prevent breakage, do not force the pump handle. If operation
becomes too difficult, lubricate piston shaft by adding a few drops
of medical grade silicone oil (non-petroleum based) into the pump
vacuum nozzle.
5.
Do not twist tubing on the pump vacuum nozzle to remove it. Doing
so may cause undue stress on the pump junction. Simply use the
tubing remover supplied to easily remove tubing from pump.

SETTING UP THE SYSTEM
1.
Check to ensure the pump needle is in its resting position within
the zero box on the gauge.
2.
Connect the sterile tubing to the pump vacuum nozzle (with cup,
or with cup and filter already assembled).
3.
Now check for integrity of system by pumping with cup pressed to
flattened palm of gloved hand. Rapidly pump until the gauge needle
is in the green area between
38 and 58 cm Hg
(centimeters of mercury) or
between 15 and 23 in. Hg
(inches of mercury). Gauge
needle should move upon
initiation of vacuum. Once
the desired vacuum level is
reached the gauge needle
should remain steady.
4.
If gauge needle does not
remain steady during test
pumping:
Check cup pressed to palm. The lines in your hand may be
causing the vacuum leak.
Check the connection of tubing to pump vacuum nozzle. Be sure
it is pushed on tight.
Check the connection of tubing to the cup handle. Be sure
it is pushed on tight.
Check the connection of tubing to filter. Be sure it is pushed
on tight.
5.
To release or reduce vacuum at the pump, gently squeeze the pump
trigger. Vacuum may be released slowly or rapidly. To discontinue
vacuum, squeeze the vacuum release trigger until gauge needle
drops into the zero box.
6.
If, after following steps 1-4, the integrity of the pump is in question,
do not use it. Contact your CooperSurgical representative.
7.
A 4-foot (1.2 meter) section of tubing is provided so that the Mityvac
pump may be operated by an assistant outside the sterile field.
8.
When delivery has been completed, remove tubing at pump and
dispose of extractor cup unit. The pump may be cleaned for reuse.
Using the tubing remover
Snap tubing remover into place with pump
vacuum nozzle in hole and tubing remover
legs around junction (Figure A).
Removing the tubing
Hold pump in hand with fingers on top pad
section of tubing remover. Press toward
gauge and tubing remover will "rock" tubing
off of pump vacuum nozzle (Figure B).
In an extremely tight tubing fit, the hand may
be reversed and the thumb, or both thumbs,
may be used to press the pad section.
