General safety notes

Dear customer,
We thank you for purchasing a Volkswagen Accessory
bicycle holder. Adhere strickly to the work procedures and
safety notes described in the assembly and operating
instructions. We accept no responsibility for damage
caused through non-observance of the instructions.
Important!
Please carefully read the assembly and operating instructions before
starting assembly.
Non-observance can cause serious injuries/death to you and others.
Important!
A bicycle carrier for a towing hitch is only suitable for the transportation
of bicycles.
Only bicycles may be transported whose total weight does not exceed
the maximum permitted load, the drawbar load and the D-fi gure in
conjunction with the carrier (see page 7).
Only a maximum of two or three bicycles may be transported.
The bicycle carrier is not suitable for use offroad.
Important!
The towing hitch must be suitable for use with a bicycle holder.
• D-fi gure for ball head of towing hitch: at least 5.3 kN (2 bicycle carrier)
or 6.7 kN (3 bicycle carrier)
Maximum payload for bicycle holder and draw bar loading of towing
hitch are never exceeded. Maximum permitted total weight and permitted
axle loading of vehicle must never be exceeded when using a bicycle
holder with/without bicycles (see vehicle Owners manual).
Important!
Secure bicycles evenly loaded and with lowest point of centre of gravity
on bicycle holder. Secure bicycles also to bicycle frame and secure front
and rear wheels of bicycle using tensioning straps to stop wheels falling
off.
Secure bicycles against falling and rolling off.
Fit heavier bicycle close to vehicle and lighter bicycle (i.e childs bicycle)
furthest away from vehicle on bicycle holder.
Remove following from bicycle before loading on carrier: child seat and
loose articles such as drink bottle, saddle bags etc.
Do not cover bicycles with, for example, tarpaulin or other protective
covers.
Load heavy loads in luggage compartment as far forwards as possible in
vehicle to prevent tail-heavy loading.
Important!
If load projects more than 40 cm ( 15.7 inches) beyond the light surface
of the side-marker light or tail light of rear carrier system, the load must
be marked by, at side with a white light facing forwards and a red light
facing to rear and positioned a maximum of 40 cm ( 15.7 inches) from
edge and a maximum of 1.5 m (4.9 feet) above road surface.
Distance of tail tights, indicators and refl ectors (not triangular shaped) to
outer contour of vehicle must not be more than 40 cm ( 15.7 inches).
Important!
When transporting bicycles, mark projecting wheels with extra markings.
When travelling at night, cover light refl ectors, refl ectors and wheel
refl ectors of bicycles so as not to distort rear light picture of vehicle. Not
covering might otherwise hinder, deceive or endanger other road users.
Important!
The vehicle user is responsible to ensure their own vision and hearing
are not impaired by the load and that the load does not adversely affect
the driving condition of the vehicle. The vehicle user must ensure that the
vehicle and the load are loaded correctly and that the roadworthiness
of the vehicle is not adversely affected. Prescribed lighting and lighting
equipment must be fi tted and operational during daylight.
Important!
After fi tting and driving approx. 20 km ( 12.5 miles), check assembly and
correct seating of bicycles and readjust as necessary.
Check all bolts and fi ttings of bicycle holder and bicycles after fi tting,
before and after each longer drive, tighten and/or readjust as necessary
and check again according to these instructions.
While driving, regularly check in rear view mirrors for possible undesired
movement or shifting of bicycle carrier and/or bicycles.
For irregularities, drive on at vastly reduced speed to next possible
stopping place and check, readjust and retighten all bolts and fi ttings on
bicycle carrier and/or bicycles.
When driving over poor, uneven road surfaces, check all bolts and fi ttings
of bicycle holder and bicycles at shorter intervals.
For non-observance, bicycle holder and/or bicycles may become loose/
fall off and endanger you and other persons, or cause damage.

Important!
Do not lubricate nuts, bolts or other threaded fi ttings. The nuts, bolts and
other threaded fi ttings may loosen and bicycle holder and/or bicycles
may become loose/fall off and endanger you and other persons, or
cause damage.
Important!
Vehicle driving characteristics, braking behaviour and sensitivity to side
wind are affected. Do not exceed the maximum permitted speed of 130
km/h (80 mph).
Important!
Only repair or exchange parts at a qualifi ed workshop. Only genuine
replacement parts obtained through an authorized dealer may be used.
Important!
Degrease ball head of towing hitch before assembly.
Caution!
Check function of lighting after fi tting bicycle holder. Before each journey
check function of lighting and ensure bicycle holder and bicycles and are
seated correctly.
Caution!
The registration plate on the bicycle holder and the vehicle registration
plate must display the same registration. The registration plate on the
bicycle holder must be easily readable.
Caution!
The registration plate and the lighting equipment of the bicycle holder
must not be covered.
Caution!
While driving, regularly check for possible undesired movement or
shifting of bicycle holder and/or bicycles in rear view mirrors.

stopping place and check, readjust and retighten all bolts and fi ttings on
bicycle holder and/or bicycles.

Remember revised width/height of vehicle when entering restricted areas
and enterances etc.
Caution!
If the vehicle is equipped with an electrically operated tailgate/boot
lid, ensure that there is suffi cient clearance when the bicycle carrier
is mounted on the towing hitch. If possible, deactivate the electrically
operated tailgate/boot lid and operate it only manually.
Note!
These assembly and operating instructions also contain the bicycle holder
general type approval for use with towing hitches and must always be
carried in the vehicle.
Note!
Always observe respective legislation when using bicycle holder in other
countries.
Note!
Remove bicycle holder when not in use.
