reconnecting the tool, depress and
release the trigger switch to ensure that
the tool is off.
Attaching Side Handle (fi g. 5, 6)
WARNING: Before using the tool,
check that the handle is tightened
securely.
For grinding, screw the side handle (e) tightly into
one of the holes (r) on either side of the gear case
(fig. 5).
For cutting, screw the side handle (e) tightly into the
top hole (s) or into one of the holes (t) on either side
of the gear case (fig. 6).
Fitting a Wire Cup Brush
Screw the wire cup brush directly onto the spindle
without the use of the spacer and threaded fl ange.
Mounting and Removing the Guard
(fi g. 2)
WARNING: To reduce the risk
of serious personal injury, turn
tool off and disconnect tool from
power source before making any
adjustments or removing/installing
attachments or accessories. Before
reconnecting the tool, depress and
release the trigger switch to ensure that
the tool is off.
CAUTION: Guards must be used with
this grinder.
When using the D28400 or the D28401 grinder for
cutting metal or masonry a Type 1 guard MUST be
used. Type 1 guards are available at extra cost from
D
WALT distributors.

NOTE: Please refer to the Grinding and Cutting
Accessory Chart at the end of this section to
show other accessories that can be used with these
grinders.
1. Place the angle grinder on a table, spindle (o)
up.
2. Release the clamping lock (f) and hold the guard
(d) over the tool as shown.
3. Align the lugs (k) with the notches (l).
4. Press the guard (d) down and rotate it to the
required position.
5. Fully close the clamping lock (f)
6. Ensure screw (m) is fastened tightly and the
guard is fixed
7. To remove the guard, reverse the above
instructions.
CAUTION: If the guard cannot be
tightened by the adjusting screw, do
not use the tool. To reduce the risk of
personal injury, take the tool and guard
to a service center to repair or replace
the guard.
Fitting and Removing a Grinding or
Cutting Disc (fi g. 1, 3, 4)
WARNING: Do not use a damaged
disc.
1. Place the tool on a table, guard up.
2. Fit the backing flange (i) correctly onto the
spindle (o) (fig. 3).
3. Place the disc (n) on the backing flange (i).
When fitting a disc with a raised center, make
sure that the raised centre (j) is facing the
backing flange (i).
4. Screw the threaded clamp nut (h) onto the
spindle (o) (fig. 4):
a. The ring on the threaded clamp nut (h) must
face towards the disc when fitting a grinding
disc (fig. 4A);
b. The ring on the threaded clamp nut (h) must
face away from the disc when fitting a cutting
disc (fig. 4B).
5. Press the spindle lock button (c) and rotate the
spindle (o) until it locks in position.
6. Tighten the threaded clamp nut (h) with the two-
pin spanner supplied.
7. Release the spindle lock.
8. To remove the disc, loosen the threaded clamp
nut (h) with the two-pin spanner.

Prior to Operation

• Install the guard and appropriate disc or wheel.
Do not use excessively worn discs or wheels.
• Be sure the inner and outer flange are mounted
correctly.
• Make sure the disc or wheel rotates in the
direction of the arrows on the accessory and the
tool.
