4. Phase control
Used to adjust the acoustic phase of the subwoofer
relative to the main speakers.
Lost remote control replacement Fig. 6 p22
1. On back panel, press BOTH the Program buttons
together.
2. If correct, the display on the front will flash to
confirm.
3. Press ANY button on replacement remote control.
4. New remote control and subwoofer are now linked.
4. Positioning
As the sub-bass (low frequency) sound produced by the
subwoofer is close to omni-directional positioning is less
critical than with full range conventional speakers.
However, we recommend placement away from the
corners of the room and not too close to the listener.
As all rooms are different it is best to experiment with
the location of the subwoofer until you are happy
with the sound.
5. Set-up and fine tuning
Make sure all signal connections are made before the
subwoofer is turned on.
5.1 Music only stereo set-up
To increase the low-frequency extension of your existing
full range stereo speakers.
Follow the connection diagrams in Fig. 7 p23
A. Single subwoofer with line level connection
B. Single subwoofer with high level connection
C. Two subwoofers with line level connection
D. Two subwoofers with high level connection
Once your subwoofer is connected and powered up it
needs to be acoustically integrated into your existing
system. To do this you will need to use the level,
frequency and phase controls. The easiest way to do
this is from your normal listening position and so the
use of the remote hand set will be required. First of all
you need to select the subwoofer low-pass filter slope to
match your main speakers. For bass reflex design
speakers the slope should be set to 24dB/octave and
for closed box speakers the slope should be set to
12dB/octave.
Select a piece of music that you are familiar with which
has a constant repetitive bass line. Start with the level

and frequency controls in the middle positions and the
phase control set to zero. Adjust the level control until
you are happy with the low frequency levels compared
to the main speakers. Now adjust the frequency control
so that there is no obvious change in the sound from
very low frequencies to higher frequencies. Adjust the
phase control to achieve the smoothest integration
between sub and main speakers. KEF recommend you
take some time adjusting the controls, while listening to
a varied selection of music, until you are satisfied with
the sound balance.
5.2 Movie only set-up
For use in 5.1 home cinema installations as the
dedicated low frequency effects (LFE) channel.
With full range speakers
Follow the connection diagram in Fig. 8A p24
Once your subwoofer is connected and powered up you
need to integrate it into your home cinema system. To
do this you will need to follow the set-up procedure for
your surround sound processor. Set the level to the
middle position and phase to zero. (The low-pass filter
has no effect on the LFE input). On the surround sound
processor's speaker menu the speakers should be set
to 'large' and subwoofer to 'on'. Use the processor
controls to adjust the level of the subwoofer when
setting each channel level.
With satellite speakers
Follow the connection diagram in Fig. 8B p24
Follow the same procedure as for full range speakers
but in the surround sound processor speaker menu set
the speakers to 'small'.
If two subwoofers are to be used this may require the
use of a Y connector to split the LFE output into two
signals, Fig. 8C+D p24. Consult your dealer for
recommended connectors.
5.3 Combined music and movie set-up
Using the subwoofer for both main speaker low
frequency extension and the LFE channel.
Set the subwoofer up as described in section 5.1. With
the subwoofer correctly set up for stereo use, connect
the LFE output from your processor to the LFE input of
the subwoofer. Without making any adjustments to the
subwoofer controls, including the level adjust, follow the
set-up procedure described in section 5.2, using your
surround processor to adjust the subwoofer level.
