BEFORE OPERATION CHECKS

IS YOUR ENGINE READY TO GO?
For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your
equip ment, it is very im portant to take a fe w m o ments before you
operate the engine to check its condition. Be sure to take care of
any proble m you find, or have your servicing dealer correct it,
before you operate the engine.
Im properly maintaining this engine, or failure to
correct a proble m before operation, can cause a
malfunction in which you can be seriously hurt or
killed.
Always perform a preoperation inspection before
each operation, and correct any proble m.
Before beginning your preoperation checks, be sure the engine is
level and the engine switch is in the O FF position.
Always check the following ite ms before you start the engine:
Check the General Condition of the Engine
1.
Look around and underneath the engine for signs of oil or
gasoline leaks.
2.
Re m ove any excessive dirt or debris, especially around the
m uffler and recoil starter.
3.
Look for signs of da mage.
4.
Check that all shields and covers are in place, and all nuts, bolts,
and scre ws are tightened.
Check the Engine
1.
Check the fuel level (see page
help to eliminate or reduce operating interruptions for refueling.
2.
Check the engine oil level (see page
with a low oil level can cause engine da mage.
3.
Check the air filter ele ment (see page
ele ment will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine
performance.
4.
Check the equip ment powered by this engine.
Revie w the instructions provided with the equip ment powered
by this engine for any precautions and procedures that should
be followed before engine startup.

OPERATION

SAFE OPERATING PRECAUTIONS

Before operating the engine for the first time, please revie w the
S AFETY IN F ORM ATIO N section on page and the BEF ORE
OPERATIO N CHECKS .
Carbon m onoxide gas is toxic. Breathing it can cause
unconsciousness and even kill you.
A void any areas or actions that expose you to carbon
m onoxide.
Revie w the instructions provided with the equip ment powered by
this engine for any safety precautions that should be observed
with engine startup, shutdown or operation.

STARTING THE ENGINE

1.
To start a cold engine, m ove the choke lever to the CLO SED
position.
To restart a warm engine, leave the choke lever in the OPEN
position.

Press the priming bulb repeatedly until fuel can be seen in the
clear-plastic fuel-return tube.
PRIMING BULB
3.
Standard/Tiller type: Turn the engine switch on the equip ment
to the O N position.
Pu m p type: Turn the engine switch to the O N position.
