VLT® Soft Starter MCD 600
Installation Guide
FOR YOUR SAFETY
To avoid personal injuries, pay attention to the following:
-
The STOP function of the soft starter does not isolate dangerous voltage from the output of the soft starter. The soft starter
must be disconnected by an approved electrical isolation device before accessing electrical connections.
-
Soft starter protection features apply to motor protection only. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure safety or person-
nel operating machinery.
-
The soft starter is a component designed for integration within an electrical system. It is therefore the responsibility of the
system designer/user to ensure that the system is safe and designed to comply with relevant local safety standards.
ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD
The equipment contains dangerous voltages when connected to mains voltage. Only a qualified electrician should carry out the
electrical installation. Improper installation of the motor shaft or the soft starter may cause equipment failure, serious injury, or
death.
-
Follow this manual and local electrical safety codes.
-
Pay special attention to AC supply cables and connections, output cables and connections, and many internal parts of the
soft starter as the voltages present in these locations can cause severe electric shock and may be lethal.
PROPER GROUNDING
It is the responsibility of the installer of the soft starter to provide proper grounding and branch circuit protection according to
local electrical safety codes. Not providing proper grounding and branch circuit protection may lead to death, personal injury, or
equipment damage.
-
Disconnect the soft starter from mains voltage before carrying out repair work.
UNINTENDED START
When the soft starter is connected to AC mains, DC supply, or load sharing, the motor can start at any time. Unintended start
during programming, service, or repair work can result in death, serious injury or property damage. The motor can start with an
external switch, a fieldbus command, an input reference signal from the LCP, or after a cleared fault condition.
-
Press [Off/Reset] on the LCP before programming parameters.
-
Disconnect the soft starter from the mains.
-
Completely wire and assemble the soft starter, motor, and any driven equipment before connecting the soft starter to AC
mains, DC supply, or load sharing.
-
Fit the power supply to the soft starter with an isolating switch and a circuit-breaking device (for example a power contactor)
controllable through an external safety system (for example an emergency stop or a fault detector).
RISK OF INJURY AT RESTART
The soft starter has built-in protections which can trip the soft starter if a fault occurs and thus stops the motor. Voltage fluctua-
tions, power cuts, and motor jams may also cause the motor to trip. The motor could restart after the causes of shutdown are
rectified, which may be dangerous for personnel.
-
Always disconnect the soft starter from mains voltage before accessing the soft starter or load.
