FOCUSING
C
Turn the focusing/zooming ring until the image on the
focusing screen appears sharp and crisp.
For pinpoint focusing, focus with the lens at the longest
focal length, then zoom in to a shorter focal length for the
desired picture composition. Once focused, there is no need
to refocus with each change in focal length. You can also
prefocus the lens by turning the ring until the distance scale
index lines up with the number which corresponds with
your estimated or measured camera-to-subject distance.
MACRO FOCUSING
D E
Although normal focusing is possible from infinity to 1.4m
(5ft), you can focus even closer at any focal length setting,
by operating the special macro ring. To get into the macro
mode, just push the macro button while turning the macro
ring to the left (in the direction of the engraved orange
arrow). This can be done at any zoom setting and any
focused distance. Once in the macro mode, focusing is done
by moving the focusing/zooming ring in and out. To preset
the reproduction ratio, first turn the focusing/zooming ring
to the closest focusing distance of 1.4m, then turn the
macro ring all the way to the left until the orange M is
opposite the green aperture index; now by zooming the lens
in or out, the orange triangle indicates the reproduction
ratio setting. At the 35mm setting, continuous close focusing
is possible from 1.4m (5ft) down to 0.27m (0.9ft), providing
a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.
In the macro mode, fine focusing can also be accomplished
by turning the macro ring back and forth. To return the
lens to the normal focusing mode, turn the macro ring in
the opposite direction of the arrow all the way to the right
unitl you hear a click.

Note 1: In the macro mode, the engraved focal lengths on
the lens barrel no longer indicate the actual focal length set-
ting, because the focusing I zooming ring is mechanically
moved forward.
Note 2: Although this lens has macro focusing capability,
the use of a Micro-Nikkor lens is recommended for docu-
ment copying or slide duplication where critical sharpness is
required.
