The split-image rangefinder, microprism or cross-hair
area is dim.
Focus on the surrounding matte area.
C= Acceptable focusing
Slight vignetting (or moire phenomenon, in the case of
the microprism) affects the screen image. The image on
the film, however, shows no trace of this.
Blank means inapplicable.
Note: The Teleconverters TC-301, TC-300, TC-14B and
TC-14 cannot be attached to this lens.
VARIABLE APERTURE

As the lens is zoomed from 35mm to 105mm, the aperture
decreases approx. 2/3 of an f/stop. This variation is indicated
by two aperture indexes engraved on the chrome mounting
ring: the green index is for use with the lens at the 35mm
setting, while the brown one is for the 105mm setting. For
intermediate focal length settings, align the aperture ring
between the green and brown aperture indexes. Referring
to Diagram 1. the maximum aperture changes from f/3.5 at
the 35mm setting to f/4.5 at 105mm. When this zoom lens
is used with cameras having through-the-lens (TTL) meter-
ing, you can forget about adjusting the aperture. However,
when an independent exposure meter is used, slight adjust-
ment is required, depending on the focal length setting.

When used with a Nikon camera and Speedlight having the
capability for automatic TTL control of the flash exposure
(such as the Nikon F3 and SB-16A), the variation in aperture
is usually automatically taken care of. However, when the
Flash-to-subject distance is close to either the near or far
limit of the auto shooting range corresponding to your
working aperture, you should readjust the aperture, if the
lens is zoomed to a different focal length. Also, when regu-
lar (non-TTL) automatic exposure or-manual control is
used, slight readjustment of the aperture is necessary.
Note: When using this lens with a speedlight on the Nikon
FG-20 or EM, make sure to set the shooting mode selector
of the SB-19 or the camera selector of the new-model SB-E
in the "A "position. With an older-type SB-E, set it to "FE-
FM".
DEPTH-OF-FIELD SCALE
A group of colored lines signifying the depth of field at two
apertures, f/11 and f/22, is engraved on the lens barrel. To
find the depth of field at a particular focal length and
aperture, first compose and focus on the subject. Then
check the numbers on the distance scale opposite the
colored lines to find the depth of field at that aperture. The
colors of the pairs of lines correspond to different lens
apertures. The continuous curved lines of the depth-of-field
scale give the reading at any focal length. You can also
observe the depth of field through the viewfinder by
depressing the depth-of-field preview button on the camera.
