5.3.- Placing the sling lying on a bed or on the floor
If the patient can get up from the bed or the floor, this will facilitate use. Lean
the patient forward making sure they are well supported to reduce the risk
of falling and to promote a sense of security.
Slide the sling under the patient's back, in the center, with the opening
symmetrical to the axis of the spine.
Rest the patient's back against the sling (graphic 3).
If the patient does not have sufficient trunk control, roll up the sling halfway,
turn the patient on their side and slide the sling off the raised side. Make sure
the center of the harness is symmetrically located along the spine. Turn the
patient the other way, unroll the sling, and return the patient to your position
on it (graphic 4).
Bend your knees, one at a time, to place the harness under your legs.
5.4.- Using the leg straps
Option 1.- Leg straps crossing: For maximum security, cross the leg straps. This will reduce the risk of pitching
forward and will also maintain better alignment of the hips and lower limbs (graph 5).
Option 2.- Place the leg straps together: If
the patient is an amputee or feels more
comfortable, pass each strap individually
under both legs. Make sure the patient is
not prone to spasm or there is a risk of
pitching forward (Chart 6).
Option 3.- Separate leg straps: Apply each support under each leg, without crossing straps. This may be
recommended when the patient has abdominal tenderness or requires intimate hygiene (graph 7).
5.5.- Fastening the suspension strips to the lateral hooks of the hanger
Fasten the shoulder and head straps before the leg straps. The harness can be used on hangers with 2 or 4
attachment points. For safety and comfort reasons the width of the hanger should correspond to the size of the
harness.
The position of the patient in the harness can be adjusted by using different straps. Short shoulder straps and
long leg straps produce a more upright lift, which will help with transfer to a chair. By lowering the shoulder
straps and shortening the leg straps, you can achieve a reclined position, more useful for transferring from chair
to bed.
