● Label the system after charging is complete (if it wasn't labelled already).
● Be careful not to overfill the refrigeration system.
● Before charging the system, it should be pressure tested with OFN, ensuring it is safe
and leak-free. After charging is complete but before commissioning, the system
should be leak tested again. A final follow-up leak test should be conducted before
leaving the site.
Decommissioning
Before performing this procedure, the technician must have a thorough understanding of
the equipment and its specifications. All refrigerants must be recovered safely. Before
starting the task, take samples of oil and refrigerant for analysis, in case further
examination is needed before reusing the reclaimed refrigerant. It is important to ensure
that electrical power is available before beginning the task.
● Become familiar with the equipment and its operation.
● Isolate system electrically.
● Before attempting the procedure ensure that:
a) Mechanical handling equipment is available, if required, for handling refrigerant
cylinders.
b) All personal protective equipment is available and being used correctly.
c) The recovery process is supervised at all times by a competent person.
d) Recovery equipment and cylinders conform to the appropriate standards.
● Using a pump, remove as much refrigerant as you can from the system.
● If a vacuum is not possible, create a manifold that allows you to remove refrigerant
from different parts of the system.
● Before starting the recovery process, ensure the cylinder is placed on the scales.
● Following the manufacturer's instructions, start and operate the recovery machine.
● Do not overfill the cylinders (no more than 80 % of the cylinder's volume).
● Do not exceed the maximum working pressure of the cylinder, even temporarily.
● Once the cylinders are correctly filled and the process is complete, remove the
cylinders and equipment from the site. Ensure all isolation valves on the equipment
are closed.
● Do not use recovered refrigerant in another refrigeration system, unless it has been
thoroughly cleaned and checked.
Labelling
Label all equipment stating that it has been decommissioned and emptied of refrigerant.
The label must be dated and signed.
Recovery
● Ensure refrigerants are removed from a system in a safe manner.
● When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, use appropriate refrigerant recovery
cylinders, which are specifically designated for that purpose.
● Ensure you have the correct number of cylinders to hold the total system charge.
● Cylinders must be labelled for the specific refrigerant being recovered. Cylinders must
be equipped with a pressure relief valve and working shut-off valves.
● Before recovery, empty cylinders should be evacuated and, if possible, cooled.
● Recovery equipment must be in good working condition, suitable for handling
flammable refrigerants. It must come with proper instructions.
● Calibrated weighing skills and hoses with leak-free disconnect couplings must be
available and in good condition.
